When there's nothing going on...

I'm four pages into my novel and stuck already. Right now, my character is travelling on her own and just lost her car. So what do I write about? What do you do in your stories when there's nothing going on? How do you get from point A to point B? I have an outline but it's pretty vague and I want t...

Re: NEVER REMEMBER: YA Fantasy

Thanks everyone for the advice! Hopefully you see some improvement here. To me this one seems a little shaky, but since I have all the answers it's a little hard to tell. Devi Ashara can only remember the last few years of her life. During her journey to find her memories she travels to Arkin where...

Re: All that paper...

I do print hard copy backups of all my books once a year (double sided, in tiny print - the important thing is that it's THERE). Then I keep them at someone else's house. I also back up whatever I'm working on in my own email account at least once a day. Scariest movie ever: "Little Women". Because...

Re: All that paper...

Great topic! I was actually thinking about this the other day... I'm planning on doing a round of edits on the computer before a major print off, but I have a question for you guys, too. Do you usually print it off yourself? Or do you print it somewhere else? (like...Kinkos or whatever; they do tha...

Re: Query; The Mask of Noesis, young adult fantasy

Hi, I am just starting out, and have finished my first novel. If anyone is willing to read my query, and let me know how it sounds. I would be grateful. Thanks for taking the time from your own writing. Juls Agent Address QueryShark advises against this (actually she rants about it). You should inc...

Re: All that paper...

I edit on the screen, but not quite the way it's usually done. See, I also had quite a few qualms about printing so many pages too, but I had trouble with the screen. You can't draw arrows on it, scribble tiny notes and questions marks, and you don't get to enjoy scratching off that whole, useless ...

Re: All that paper...

While I do want to save trees and all that, for me it's also partly because in my family we reused anything we could. Any paper with at least one clear side was used for scrap paper (really came in handy), we composted, threw apple cores and the like out the back door for whatever animal wanted it, ...

Re: All that paper...

Well, by messing with spacing I shortened the manuscript by about 100 pages. Still, so much paper. But this is the draft I considered final and it could really use another edit (especially with 62 queried agents and no hits). Margo, where do you get the recycled paper? Is it something that can be pi...

All that paper...

I was wondering how many people print off their full manuscripts for editing purposes. I'm dying to because that's when I do my best editing and I love going through page after page with my red pen (sick, I know). The thing is, even though I would keep it, I don't feel right about using so much ink ...

Re: Must Read For Those About To Query

Ah, but here's my question. They want us to be respectful to them by putting their name in the salutation. Why can't they take five seconds to show us the same courtesy? We work hard too, don't we deserve some recognition?

Re: Pricing

It's the publishers. They give the booksellers a set price to charge and each party gets a certain amount from the proceeds. I worked at a bookstore last summer. Occasionally if my supervisor(the one ordering the books) got a really good deal on a shipment she'd immediately put them on sale. She rar...

Re: Crossing Thresholds

2nd attempt, hope I am moving in the right direction. In the year 1976, everyone looks old to Mary, even the young people. Maybe it's the long hair and scraggly beards of the dirty, bare footed, shirtless dudes. Maybe it's the sagging, braless breasts flagrantly flopping like freak flags below the ...

Re: Crossing Thresholds

It’s the year 1976, and 16-year-old Mary O’Connor can’t wait to grow up and be on her own. Mary views her parents as conservative, overprotective, 1950’s minded people whom she must carefully keep on a need-to-know basis. Her parents don’t get her, or her generation. This paragraph is pretty cliche...

Re: THE ELITE (YA)

Hi everyone! I've gone through a few drafts of my query and am at that stage where I think I'm too close to it and need an outside perspective. Thanks SO much in advance for any thoughts, advice, etc! (This is just the descriptive part of the query for the moment--not the whole shebang.) And also, ...

Re: Rejection Stats

I just looked back at my submission spreadsheet from when I queried my first manuscript. 10% of agents who said they always respond did not. The queries or the responses were e-sidetracked. So, just a bit of advice to anyone who thinks they've received a non-response rejection from someone who resp...
