Re: Sol of a Gladiator - Query VERSION 3

Ok, I've made some revisions and I would very much appreciate some more feedback. Thanks a bunch! Dear PROPERLY SPELL AGENT NAME, In the heart of the tyrannical Astrolian Empire, deep in the bowels of the Coliseum, the orphan Sol is raised by a makeshift family of guards and fellow slaves to become...

Re: Query- Riding on the Tail of the Devil

OK, here's another draft. Just to clear something up. While my protagonist starts at thirteen, this is not a YA fantasy. There are too many extremely violent scenes and then there's the foul language of the street. I honestly can't see any way for it to be even considered YA. Lots of YA is violent ...

Re: Query- Riding on the Tail of the Devil

Here is my latest draft. ------------------------------------------ Dear Agent: “You know you’ve been on the streets too long when the sound of an old man urinating in an alley sounds like falling rain,” Mathias thought . . . This doesn't actually mean anything. I would not advise you including it....

Re: Share your opening sentence!

Yea! First post. Anyway, I'm kind of hating it right now, but here it is. "At the end of a very short lane sits a very large house with far too many windows and hardly any doors. " Shorten the sentence. i suggest you cut out the "very" and the "far" and what does "hardly" mean? 2 doors? one door? H...

Re: To bury or to resurrect? That is the question.

Personally, I am not a fan of pulling punches unless they amount to so much wankery.

Meaning if it is important to the plot and it has a point, keep it regardless of whether someone might be offended or turned off.

Re: How do you get yourself to write?

I think it is very important to cultivate the ability to write anywhere, with the tools you have at hand. Whether you want to isn't the issue. It is like jumping in to cold water. The more you think about it, the less likely you are to do it. There's no advice beyond patch together that first senten...

Re: Query- Riding on the Tail of the Devil

I've gotten a few rejections with my current query, and would like some help to see if it's the query that is the problem. --------------------------------------- Dear Agent X, Mathias is a street kid. He never believed in reincarnation, never thought he would live anywhere else but the streets and...

Re: Too Much Going ON (a song by Marvin Gaye)

Perhaps you are entering the Tunnel of Broken Perceptions. By that I mean the frustrating state many of us experience where we have lost all perspective on what works and what does not. When you spend too much time along with imaginary people, it can become impossible to look at your words with an o...

It is my understanding that "grey" is a color whereas "gray" is often a surname of British Isles origin.

My only advice is don't give up until you get one hundred rejections, at least.
