Re: Passive Voice Debate

What about when magic comes into play? "Roberto splayed his hands and Victor was sent hurtling backwards into the wall". Is that better or worse than: "Roberto splayed his hands, sending Victor hurtling backwards into the wall". I've seen both methods used in books and it always irks me when the pas...

The Harry Potter series. About 7-8 times.

Re: The Son of the Spider (YA)

The doorbell rang. Bravely, I think calling him brave in this line clashes with the description of him as "trembling" later on. If someone was brave would they tremble? I guess they might, but here it doesn't really work for me Calvin unfolded himself and rose from his rickety chair, picking up the...

I believe he says the man died some years later.

Re: Share your opening sentence!

"You're just not despicable enough," was the last and only thing they said before they banished him. I did like this one! I'd actually give this one a 10! Usually people strive to become successfull, perfect, beautiful and popular. But here you are told that they want you to be worse! This may have...

"Really? Cuz to survive as a teacher you need an addiction of some sort -- alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, cocaine -- doesn't matter as long as you've got an addiction!" "Actually, I'm addicted to the highs of a good plot arc, the lows of a protaganist's struggling, and the overall madness of this p...

Re: MC "hijacking" query?

Very true. It's just very easy to be overlooked. Though I do realise there are no shortcuts, hence why I decided to make this thread to be sure.

Re: Improving my writing

Just a point I want to make. Having a good self-contained dictionary/thesaurus isn't necessarily a good thing. Never write a word you don't think your target audience will understand. I hate when I'm reading a novel and I see words I haven't heard of or seen before. No, I'm not an idiot. I just don'...

Re: How do you get yourself to write?

Yes! Margo, you've reminded me of something. Don't wait for inspiration to strike. Just sit down and write. I made that mistake during the writing of my first novel, which I later scrapped. Since starting my second, I don't wait for my muse, and I find my writing is more of what I want it to be: sma...

Re: MC "hijacking" query?

This is such a tricky one, and I've thought of the same thing. Wouldn't it be better to have my MC write the query? Especially since agents really want to hear the voice of the work? When the novel is first person, well isn't that the voice of the MC anyway? I haven't read widely on this, but I've ...

Re: How do you get yourself to write?

Of course the love plays a huge part of it. But I believe every single writer has to discipline themselves to sit down and write. I love writing more than anything else. But I'm lazy. I have to force myself to squeeze out 2,000 words a day. A good piece of advice I've heard is setting a certain time...

From my current WIP:

It started with an earthquake.

Not sure if "it started with" is a cliche. Maybe somebody could enlighten me?
