Re: How do you know when you're ready?

I should hope there's no confetti. Do you have any idea how hard that stuff is to clean up? ;) The more I think about this, the more I've come to the conclusion that if I have to ask whether or not I'm ready, I'm probably not. In my case, I know I'm not. Getting feedback gave me a reality check, and...

Re: How do you know when you're ready?

Thanks, Krista! Natalie Whipple's post is exactly what I was thinking of. I'm in the place where I know I'm not ready, but having been through this for a decade and a half so far, it's impossible not to feel just a tiny bit frustrated. I'm grateful to know that I have more to learn, because I *do* w...

How do you know when you're ready?

I seem to fall into the trap of realizing the flaws in my writing only after I receive feedback. I'm a highly self-analytical person, which is great, because when I find a flaw, I try to improve. What's not-so-great (but probably good for me, even if I don't like it) is the fact that every time I th...

Re: How many of you write while tipsy?

I find that alcohol is a tool to separate one's creative self from one's overanalytical self. That being said, I don't write much under the influence, because I find that I can achieve the same effect with other tools. Music, for instance, distracts my brain so that I can get into the zone and be cr...

Congrats on that novel, Moira :)
Yes, like "if" and "when".

Thanks!

Re: Persephone has a really good agent

I've often thought of the antisocial-social-antisocial-social-antisocial again loop that defines me as a Persephone-like descent. Great post!

Re: Is your ‘but’ too big?

Thank you for bringing this up. I've been reducing my 'but'-size lately and boy, I've noticed the difference. Ever since I tried the 'but'-reduction program, I've gained a whopping 100,000 words!

Re: Advice From Amateurs?

Being an "amateur" myself, I'm not sure how my opinion counts on this one ... ;) Seriously, though? I think that when it comes to writing, I've been listening to advice since I was twelve. At this point, I've learned to discriminate somewhat. There are only so many different subtopics before you eng...

Re: Music or quiet when you write?

It seems to depend on my state of mind. Sometimes, I need quiet, because I have enough voices in my head already. (From the characters, I swear!) Sometimes, I need music. But I find that if I need music it's so that I can get into the zone, where I'm not really hearing it, and it's just providing wh...
