Re: Plot or Character - Which Comes First?

It often depends on the story for me. The story that has most dominated my life came to me as an idea, rather than a character. It was actually a dream. There was no real plot, beyond the most basic spark, and I've forgotten the characters that were in the dream. Other times, a character will come t...

Re: How do you find your inspiration?

My main WIP was first inspired by a dream, and then continually re-inspired by all the research I'm doing for it. My second WIP was inspired when I saw an old radio on the show Pawn Stars and the idea pretty much leaped into my head. My favorite character who has yet to have his own WIP was inspired...

Re: Query: HARP-BROKEN

I'm seeking representation for YA fantasy HARP-BROKEN, complete at 67,000 words. Based on Irish mythology, it should appeal to readers who enjoy Herbie Brennan or Charles de Lint. Query Shark rants about this all the time. A query is about your story; not about who it should appeal to or why you're...

Re: Query Critique – Cameron Kincaid and The Perfect Treasure –

Dear Ms. Agent, (personal note to the agent) Some agents (Like Janet Reid/Query Shark) don't like it when you start with a personal note about them. They'd rather you start with your novel. I'd try to check which agents you're querying don't mind queries that start with something personal and which...

Re: First, second and third person p.o.v

My opinions on the various styles: First Person: First person is, ironically, the POV I chose for my first story, but the POV I find the most difficult to write now. I think that it's the easiest for beginning writers to start with because you write from your character's POV and get to know your cha...

Re: Teenage Writers?

Diamonte and Emerald, I'm so glad that you decided to join the forums when you saw this thread! These forums are amazing; I don't know of any other place where an agent is so available to people who may never move beyond a rough draft, and everyone else here is really knowledgeable. Just look at thi...

Re: WHAT A PAINE! Take 2

Dear Agent, All Reece P aine wants is to get through the tangle of family calamities Like what and job insanity Are the family calamities and insanity at her job connected? Since I'm assuming they are based on the rest of your query, you should establish this here instead of in the next sentence. Y...

Re: Music Suggestions for Writing

Honestly, it depends on what I'm writing. For one of my WiPs, most of the music is Breaking Benjamin, but especially these two songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25Rt7cOD3SQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTjnhS96Nyo Linkin Park's latest inspired a drabble featuring the characters from that WiP l...

Re: Page Critique Friday 8/27/10

A white Transit van pulls into a long straight road by the town park, slows for the speed bumps, then indicates right. Pulls into I don't think the repetition works here. a small car park This is the second time you've used the word park in two sentences, you might want to substitute this one with ...

Haha, I totally forgot to check on this thread until Nathan linked to it in his latest blog post. My bad. Madeline, you sound more dedicated than I am, honestly. And that's awesome. I've tried to write early in the morning and it never works, but I do set aside two hours after school to write. Whene...

Re: Who first inspired you to read?

My Mom taught me to read, but it was when I picked up a book from the Pony Pals series by Jeanne Betancourt in second grade. After I read the first book, I couldn't stop reading and read everything in our classroom.
