Re: Forum Suggestions?

Ummm, maybe make them less addictive? Ha! No, seriously . . . I think Seamus made a good suggestion about possibly having a writing critique section, and I agree that maybe there could be a sub-category for query critiques. I was also wondering how you would feel about a competitions section? I don'...

Re: Genre writing

Hey Justine, I thought I would reply using this thread instead of the 'Ask Nathan' thread :) Yeah, romance. Man! I would definitely consider my novel WAITING FOR APRIL romance, but the ending isn't all fuzzy. It will be eventually, but because I want it to be a series, the ending is kind of up in th...

Genre writing

I couldn't find a thread that specifically asked which genre everyone prefers to write, so I thought I would ask. Apparently I have a soft spot for paranormal romance, which I didn't expect! I would love to keep writing in this genre, and am hoping my current MS will get picked up for a possible ser...

Re: Unreasonable Expectations

In the words of a Joss Whedon character (Anya, from Buffy): "I was being patient, but it was taking too long!"

This sums up my personality beautifully! :)

Re: US or UK spelling in a query/manuscript

G'day, fellow Aussie :) I will be querying in Australian English, because, well, I'm an Aussie. The agent will want to deal with you as an Aussie, so spelling shouldn't be an issue for a query, but I have already changed my MS to US English. I had an American friend go through it, too, just to deter...

Re: Ask Nathan

Oh, the dreaded 3-0 is going to sucker-punch both of us this year, Nathan! It's no wonder you love monkeys! I want to say that, personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the age of an agent (both biologically and professionally speaking) - if they work for a reputable agency, then I would assume...

Re: Careful Revision vs. Seizing Opportunity...

Hi SarahEMC2, I don't know much about the publishing industry. Nathan's blog has been a bible for me, and these forums are great for meeting others who are in our boat. Okay, okay. I can't resist. "We're gonna need a bigger boat." Jaws rocks. Obviously Christi and Nathan have answered your question,...

Re: The literary agent is also a practicing author - say what?

There is a process: Research the agent you want. Do they accept your genre? Yes? OK. Check their website for submission guidelines. Do they accept snail mail, or email queries? Jessica Faust clearly states on her website that they will only accept proposals via snail mail if they have specifically r...

Re: Length of novel issues

I write too much, and then agonize over editing a lot of it out. My first draft was 175K, but after a gazillion edits, I now have it down to 120K. I didn't think it was possible, and my beta readers freaked out because they were scared their favourite bits would go, but I've managed to keep almost e...

Re: Beautiful Language in TV Shows

My favourite TV show of all time is Buffy the Vampire Slayer . If you love Firefly , it's written by the same man, Joss Whedon - an absolute genius, in my opinion! I have them all on DVD, and have watched them all at least five times! My husband is all like, "Again? Didn't you just watch these throu...

Re: Dreamtraveler Query: Covenant (YA Fantasy)

[quote="jmcooper"] Dear Beautiful, Kind, Intelligent Agent, (that's a joke, in case you don't hear tone-of-voice in emails like my father) I am not one for following rules, but I will discipline myself for this reason alone: I want my book published and in the hands of young readers who love fantasy...

Re: Revised query: Waiting for April

Final version (hopefully!). I would like to thank everyone who has critiqued this query - you've all been a fantastic help! Dear [Agent], Twenty-one-year-old college student, April Fletcher, is unaware that she is living her fifteenth life. April doesn’t know that she has never before survived to s...

Re: Revised query: Waiting for April

Thanks Yoshima and Ghost in the Machine!

Everyone's enthusiasm for the story has really made me feel like I'm on the right track! I think I'll stick to the short version and see how that goes, but I'll post my final version before I start sending it out!

Jaime.
