Re: Contest ideas?

Who can come up with the best faux book title?

Something that would make you want to buy the book without reading the blurb :)

Re: Throat-clearing & Head-banging

I'm with you, Emily. I posted a similar topic in this thread called "Action, anyone?" and there are a few differing and interesting opinions there. I think it's pretty rough - especially considering it was only your first page . I like to be invested in my characters before I start caring about whet...

Re: Best TV show of all time?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I'm sure my husband is waiting for me to turn my back so that he can take my collection and burn it.

Re: Action, anyone?

I'm not sure which genre you're writing in, but I'd be very careful with this advice. I think there's a sense sometimes that you have to jump out and grab your reader by the throat, and this isn't always easy to do because the reader doesn't necessarily know the world and the stakes. I do think it ...

Re: Double Narrative Structure

Hey there, fellow Aussie! I've also written a double narrative, chapter by chapter, and my beta readers have had no trouble following it, at all. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. As long as it flows, and gives the reader what they need to move the story forward, you should just go with your gut.

Re: The importance (and difficulty) of gestures

I'm right there with you, Ink. Sure, I have sighs, and eye rolls, but more often, I use character gestures that show us their unique tics. For example, my female MC rubs her hands together because they always tingle when she's nervous or anxious. My male MC rubs the back of his head when he's feelin...

Re: Swearwords. US vs. the rest

God, I LOVE that there are Aussies on here! We had another 'root' conversation on a different thread. Hi Kay! *waves* :) I mean, crikey, we've got sheilas and blokes throwing the 'root' word around like it's goin' outta fashion! but i can't think of any words that would turn mainstream america again...

Action, anyone?

I have recently had my first 10 pages critiqued by a very generous literary intern, and the gist of the advice was that I need more tension/action straight off the bat. This got me to thinking, how many of you have some tension/action so early on? Is this an effective means of roping in a reader, or...

Re: Are dialogue tags really that bad?

But what if you already know he's angry? For my last point I'm gonna use Jaime's funny line as my guinea pig (sorry Jaime! Figured you wouldn't mind since it was just a jokey line) "I like my reading to have some emotion, damn it!" she yelled, thumping her fist on the table. This made me laugh, but...

Re: Are dialogue tags really that bad?

Tag away, baby! I'm with you, Emily! "I like my reading to have some emotion, damn it!" she yelled, thumping her fist on the table. Maybe I don't want to imagine how they're saying things. He said, she said, blah, blah, blah - I feel like I'm watching a Miffy episode (for those not in the know, it's...

Re: Facebook vs. Twitter

Okay, so I'm seriously considering joining Twitter. Problem is, I know nothing about it! It's not all that big here in Oz, but I have found it amusing following a few people over in the US. Any advice for a newbie?
