Re: Mad Ideas for promoting your novel

On the subject, I noticed this article today. An author paid actresses to stand in public places and laugh at her book:

Re: Mad Ideas for promoting your novel

First, I'd steal a whole bunch of cats. Then I'd photograph those cats with my book, hopefully in funny poses. Then I'd upload all the pictures to lolcats. Someone's bound to make a funny caption for one of them and get on the front page.

Then I get arrested for stealing cats. Mass media coverage!

Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE

Steampunk! Yay! Guess what my series is. Dieselpunk really, but close enough. But is steampunk really ‘next’ or new, apart from the name? Jules Verne? But I suppose the deliberate and self-conscious retroism is the difference. Yesterday’s SF becomes tomorrow’s steampunk/dieselpunk. Vampires weren't...

Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE

Steampunk! That's more because I'm hopeful than for any real marketing reason. The genre does seem to be getting more publicity for all age ranges though.

Re: Qualified to Write???

I don't have any writing qualifications. Most of the creative writing I've done over the years has been real-time roleplaying. A few years back, I decided to start writing fiction and submitting it for publication. In that year, I won a contest on Nathan's blog, so I can't have been that bad. Rolepl...

Re: Reading Rate?

I read at the speed I talk when it's a book I want to read. I've read up to three books a day. I usually have long cooldown periods between books though, so I don't read quickly if you average it out over a few months.

Re: Second Hand Books

I buy some books new. I also buy copies of/make donations to fiction magazines. Mostly though, I buy books second hand (and read the free-to-view ezines). It's a budget thing. I'd buy more new books if I could.

Re: What works better for you: praise or critique?

I like both. Criticism helps highlight weak spots, but it's important to know the strong parts as well. A mix of praise/criticism also tells you if something is down to personal opinion. If one reader hates the part with the fish and another loves it, chances are it was reader preference and not bec...

Re: Do you write the same genre you read?

Mostly. I write fantasy and science fiction. I often read those too (though I do read other stuff). The main difference is I read a lot more children's fiction than I write (which may well change one day, as I'd like to write children's books too).

Re: Should bloggers charge for their writing?

It depends on why you blog. If you're posting detailed articles, you could sell those to magazines (or paying professional blogs). But a lot of writers are blogging to network, with the hopes of it leading to sales later. It's a bit like selling your friends tickets to your birthday party. They're n...
