Re: Forgotten Gods Query (Again)

Thanks for the links, Holly!

Michael and I have had major issues getting our query pared down without losing critical info.

Re: Lost Cargo *updated version*

Much better! More focused and a better sense of the stakes. (also I quite like the image of a predator that camoflages itself as a concrete pillar.)

Forgotten Gods Query (Again)

Thanks to all of you who contributed feedback before. This is the re-written letter, minus the personalized stuff to the agent, etc. BTW, the manuscript is about 95,000 words. *** It’s winter, 1745. Scotland is losing a war for independence. The advancing British army has orders to leave no survivor...

Re: Lost Cargo

A few overall thoughts-- I think you have an interesting premise, but you don't develop the stakes enough in the query. For starters, the consequences of a space-ship-load of alien critters running around Washington, DC. You also might want to slim down the section introducing the pilot. His reactio...

Re: Seasons Greetings

Awww, thanks.
I made it to the USA (where my closest family members live) from Scotland, just beating the winter snow, and managing NOT to get stranded in Iceland, so I'm pretty happy. That, and I have an adorable itty-bitty Christmas tree.

Re: History Longshot

I think ancient history is very interesting, but I'm definitely more a student of modern history, particularly the Caribbean, Japan and Europe. My academic work is focused on 18th and 19th century Scotland.
But I always love learning more!

Re: How to get through a writer’s workshop without throwing up

I think a big part of critique is being able to separate when a) someone has a hard-to-hear but accurate criticism of your piece, b) when someone is on a different wavelength and you just don't 'click', or c) when the person is being a jerk. (I say this as perhaps the only person in the world who se...

Re: What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

Snow, decorations, and Christmas carolers. My absolute fave in the decorations department is greenery with white or blue lights-- so pretty! And Gaelic Christmas carols! And this year we have beautiful snow here in Glasgow (yeah, everyone's complaining about it). Michael (via Skype, about a minute a...

Re: Stupid things we think about

I used to wonder how cool it'd be if we took vacations to other times instead of places. Nearly a year later I saw a Family Guy in which future Stewie did this. Didn't see that episode. I'd go to the 1300s. Or maybe I'd try the 1400s if I was going to see my American ancestors... Other stupid thing...

I often wonder if intelligent animals (like dolphins, etc, that have self-recognition) have a concept of gender.

Re: FLY or NOT FLY ???

I have to fly once a year or so between Scotland and the USA-- no road-trip option there. As for security measures, I don't mind taking shoes off, etc., because it's to keep us safe. Full-body scans, fine. If it catches some nutcase with weapons or smuggled animals or drugs or the like, good for the...
