Re: Query - By the Sword (Fantasy) - 1st Revision

Congrats, it's looking MUCH better! But now you've changed your genre listing from 'high fantasy' to 'young adult Christian fantasy' (and good job there, too, the latter genre's much more in line with your plot as described), the religious element is becoming problemic again. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Query-HEROIN HEROINE- Romantic Suspense

Overall, this left me confused, and I agree with what the other posters have already said, especially in regards to Wayne's behaviour. And I don't even know what the DEA is. I agree that you can ditch the hook line, and start with this, which I do like a lot: 'When documentary film maker Fiona Corol...

Re: Query - By the Sword (Fantasy)

I have to say, I'm having a little trouble reconciling the idea of a traditional God and Devil playing major roles in what you describe as high fantasy. Not that these worlds wouldn't have their own gods, but all I can think of is the Christian image. Also, there's issue in how you tie the stakes ba...

It's usually YA Contemporary Fantasy, but my current WIP is YA Magical Realism. I wish I had a short 'n snappy genre to work into my queries. ;)

Re: Let's Discuss Edward...

Do I wish that Meyers had created a stronger female character, or at least written books that pass the Bechdel test? Well, yes. But my worry is about the impact it will have on its readers. Bella doesn't have to be reprehensively domineering, but it would be nice if she stood on her own two feet an...

Re: Let's Discuss Edward...

And whatever people say about her writing style, well done to Meyer for creating a series that people are so passionate about. I think the issue peopla may have is with the combination of Meyer's florid style and average skill level. I did read all the books when I was younger and I did enjoy the f...

To be honest, I think the line in your signature would work as a pretty good hook! :)

Re: Querying UK Agents?

Thanks for the update, David. I'm looking to query UK agents, even though the pool is lessened, because I think my MS will find a better home there.

I'm trying to navigate the Writers and Artists site now. How I wish the UK and Ireland had an equivalent to America's Query Tracker!

Re: What genre do you read the most?

Working my way through the Penguin classics. I suppose 'classic' is a rather broad term for what I'm reading, since many of the books were original published in the last few decades. Can I just say I'm reading the cheap little books with the ugly orange covers? [Although I've got nothing against ora...

Re: Hunger Games Movie

I just finished book 3 last night. I will be interested to see how this is marketed to teens (PG13 rating) since it reads as a pretty solid "R" movie. Especially with the end of book 3. Wow. It will certainly be an M-rated film on this side of the world - meaning it's appropriate for teens fifteen ...

Re: Query an agent in another country?

I'm in the same boat as you. There are so few literary agencies in Australia, and once you remove the agents who aren't currently accepting submissions and who don't represent your genre, the pickings are slim indeed! I'm going to try a few more local agents and then look across the pond - probably ...

Re: Rejection Stats

Queries sent: 1 Rejections: 1 Not bad odds, really. It was my dream agent, and they requested exclusivity along with a partial. But I'm glad to finally get an answer, even if it was a no - twelve weeks was a long time to wait. And the rejection was personalised, and very complimentary! Ah well, on t...
