Re: Resume?

I'm with Curtis Brown, but the Australian branch. There's no requirement for a resume, but my submission required that a cover letter was sent, which included "any pertinent biographical information such as former publications or any special knowledge or experience that is relevant to the book". I'd...

Re: J.K. Rowling's new book - The Casual Vacancy

I am looking forward to her book, if no other reason than to see if Harry Potter happened to be a fluke But Harry Potter most definitely wasn't a fluke, in either its popularity or writing style; people always seem to forget that she re-created the same level of magic seven times ! I'll definately ...

Re: Dos and don'ts for writer websites...?

Case in point: I went to Tiana's blog and I've been reading for fifteen minutes because it's such a lovely design and the blog content is interesting, as opposed to simple self-promotion. Take all the tips you can from her!

Re: How long do you take to finish a draft/ WIP?

My first novel took me years. I wrote it over the last year of high school and then throughout university. At some point I must have know that it was unsalvagable, but I kept at it. It became more of a vanity project, I'm sorry to say. It's trunked good and proper now. Second novel on the other hand...

Re: The purest form of advertising

You've got a real ear for the most beautiful phrases - 'moc croc embossed' being my particular favourite. But on the most part, I agree with Falls Apart. Have you been through the Bransforum archives and Query Shark?

Re: QUERY: VANQUISH - YA/Alternate History

This is really really good! Sounds very steampunk-y and cool. :) I'm sure you know the word count a tad long, but I sense the aerial-war takes up the bulk of your novel. In that case, it could make this query read as exclusively set-up, which you want to avoid. Perhaps expand upon what kind of role ...

Re: Progression and style question

I'd read up on the Decoy Protagonist page at tv tropes. That site's a goldmine for writing craft.

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

Yesterday I signed with Pippa Masson at Curtis Brown Australia. :D I can't even find words for the way I feel now - and finding the right words is now my official job!

Re: TENDER query - YA dystopian fantasy

I'm echoing wilderness - this dystopian world does sound cool! The thing I find most unique about the concept is that the world, on first view, appears quite utopian. Obviously, there's more to it than that. A few thoughts Don’t be careful what you wish for – let the Tenders do that. In the year 201...

Re: Not letting an audience know what's in a novel.

Wow. First of all, maybe you could check your privilege while writing about transgendered characters. And who precisely do you mean by "that audience"? I hope you don't mean the LBGTQ community, because putting quotation marks around a character's gender would certainly be offensive. I'm not trying ...

Re: Publishers Weekly on the future of YA

Doug Pardee wrote: [*] Suzanne Collins, author: "This is a population of young people who don’t remember a time when the country was not at war."
That makes my stomach hurt to read. Young people read books that both reflect and distort their own realities, and it's sad to think that wars in novels are the former.

Formatting manuscript for Kindle?

This may be the stupidest question ever, but I've just had a full manuscript request and the agent asked to specifically send it "so I can read it on my Kindle." So, my question: do I have to change to standard formatting at all to make it viewable on a Kindle or other e-reader? Is there some sort o...
