Re: Tumblr vs. Blogger

Of course, 'mindset of impatience' is just a longer way of saying 'internet.' It's not like you can avoid that factor altogether, but you can lessen it some. So true, Emerald! Leo - here's a link to my tumblog. I don't 'blog'-blog much - most of my posts are, like, pictures of cats and other cute s...

Re: When to edit yourself?

I'm gonna echo everyone else and say: edit when it feels organic. Personally, I would have a mini-meltdown over letting my word count runaway with words I can't ultimately use - I edit as I go, because I simply find it easier to have something more polished when I finish the first draft. That said, ...

Re: When can you tell the gender of a writer?

Such an interesting post, Hillsy. I think, more-so than 'male privilidge', it's good to examine 'the male gaze' here, which explains how 'the camera' (ie the prism through which the story is viewed) is nearly 100% always defaulted to men, even when telling women's stories. I really don't know how to...

Re: Query: Humorous Women's Fiction

An excellent query! Full of dark humour, voice and spark. Like bobcgirl8, I'd suggest breaking up the paragraphs slightly. I'd also lose this line completely: and countless baby showers thrown (for other less-deserving women, of course), It has a mean edge that's not present anywhere else in the que...

Re: Tumblr vs. Blogger

I loooooooove Tumblr. In my experience, it's a really fun way to waste time - but, like you said, it's got a real community vibe. I use it because I like to post pictures and videos and news stories as well as stuff about writing and reading and my own novel. I like the mixed-media aspect of it. And...

Re: YA Supernatural Query

I don't see it as a truly dark subject, because I believe it is handled well. I mean, how many of us five or six years ago thought we'd enjoy reading about teenagers killing each other in the forest for sport? It's true that YA is infinitaly more daring than it's ever been in the past - and that's ...

Re: YA Supernatural Query

I wonder if there's a specific genre for Heaven + Hell epics? "In the tradition of The Divine Comedy ...." I guess! Don't be discouraged! I personally think it's much easier to iron out any plot kinks by polishing up your query as early in the process as possible - I wrote my query before I wrote th...

Re: YA Supernatural Query

Hmm. Could you perhaps include the remainder of the relevant info - title, word count, audience, etc.? I'm not an agent, but I can tell you right off the bat that I'd never pick up a book where the opening premise is a sixteen-year-old completing suicide and being thrown in to Hell per the old Roman...

^ and counselor. And there's no need to capitalise 'Sexy'. Spelling errors are huge red flags for agents.

Fantastic, askmonkey! It's always good to hear stories like this, and now people can examine your query to see what made it stand out! All the best with your submissions!
