Re: So I want to self publish... kinda sorta, not really

I also have friends and family and coworkers who have verbally commited to buying 2 to 3 copies each to pass out as gifts. My impression is that first run sales directly correlate to how much your publisher likes you. If you get your book published, then you'll want to tap your resources for sellin...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

It took me a while to get this one out, but it's finally up: Grand Gestures Quitting my job to write full time has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In some ways, it helped me to access a depth of confidence and creativity that I’d long thought beyond my reach. That said, I’d never reco...

Re: Google Buzz

I've had it on since the launch. The only real privacy issue was the potential to display email addresses to people who follow your buzz. They turned Buzz on with everyone opted into the program rather than suggesting they sign up for it. This was corrected in something like 36 hours, and they made ...

Re: Buying A Domain and Setting Up Professional E-mail

Buying the domain name is very simple, and there's no harm in buying that right away and sitting on it. Setting up an email address can be more difficult, depending on the domain registrar/hosting company you choose. Once you pick a specific company, you'll need to follow their instructions, or seek...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

As a plotter, I've sort of fallen between the gaps a little this week. My latest blog post is about the benefits that sometimes come from just sitting down and Faking It.

Re: One Liners

Can you find a way to rephrase it without 'It's about'? It might have more impact with a character name in it, but you're very close.

Re: Grey or Gray

It's simply UK versus American spelling. In Canada we write the colour grey, down there you write the color gray.

Re: BROKEN MIRROR, new query, new delivery

I skipped the first page and so have not read the advice contained therein, but I'm surprised at how you've structured your query. This is from Query Shark Dear Query Shark, I would like you to consider Polaris, my YA romantic suspense novel for your list. The manuscript is completed at 81,000 words...

Re: What are you reading now?

I'm in the middle of Roberto Bolaño's 2666 but am taking a short break with The Golden Mean by Anabel Lyon. 2666 is very good, but sustains an impressive intensity through every densely packed page.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

This one may not jive with everyone, but it's something I've been sort of turned off by when browsing blogs recently: Keeping Your Rough Drafts Private Something I’ve noticed around the aspiring author blog scene is the posting of writing from a work in progress, usually accompanied by a disclaimer ...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Today's post looks at the time considerations of beginning a novel length project: Novel Writing and Commitment It’s important to love your story. You don’t always have to be ecstatic about sitting down and typing, and there is every chance you may hate your characters and the whole idea by the time...

Re: How old are you?

My first real attempts at writing fiction were probably when I was 20 and decided that a career in engineering wasn't for me. Unfortunately, I didn't complete a draft of a single story until I was 28 and had to include a sample of work in my application for a year long writing studio. I've completed...

The pot of coffee I'm about to make.

Re: Breaks In and Between Writing Projects

I just blagged about this last week. I started my current WIP while living and surfing in Costa Rica for a few months, but couldn't seem to make my situation work when I got home. I was between living spaces and having a difficult time of finding a good place to write, and was just generally unmotiv...
