Re: Jane Austen

For some reason I really wanted to read 'Persuasion'. I went and bought it and - couldn't even really get started. She lost me before she ever got started. Granted, I am an impatient person by nature, but I usually have the patience for a good book. But this particular one starts out with the most b...

Re: Start with THE HOBBIT or FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?

I never knew that about Tolkein, but I love it! I think it's interesting and inspirational.

Sorry for the piddly little comment, but I just wanted to say that.

Oh, and Nathan, I think you'll love Return of the King, but that's just me. :)

Re: Does your setting own you?

This hasn't happened to me - yet. But it could. I'm a very detail-oriented writer (I know that's probably a ridiculous statement, I'm sure most writers are), so I think I have a tendency to put too much detail into different aspects of my story. I can see myself getting caught up in the setting if I...

Re: Is present tense ever okay?

I tend to gravitate toward writing in third person, and I like to read third person, too. I think writing in the present tense would be tricky, but might be intriguing if you can pull it off. I'd check it out!

Re: How did you decide the genre?

I've opted to call mine literary fiction and then use fabulist and romantic-ish (I confess, I cringe)... Ha! I feel the same way. I've been leaning toward fantasy fiction/romance, but I really don't necessarily want the romance tag on there. No offense, of course, to the romance genre. I'm really t...

Eyeballs needed on Fantasy Fiction/Romance

I've got a wip that's about 3/4 done that I need a fresh set of eyes on. It's a fantasy fiction/romance, but not the blech-y over the top kind. There is one scene in particular that I've been thinking about cutting, and you'll know it when you see it. Some things are evolving still, and there is a b...

Re: What do you "do"?

I'm the single mom of two boys, 12 and 5, who works as a Surgical Technologist in Labor & Delivery at my local hospital. In the fall I'll be a full-time nursing student and third shifter. Eeesh! I'm also an artist, a seamstress, a storyteller on occasion (the live-action kind) and a singer. So, let'...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

Even though I've come to realize I'll have to go back and add more to the beginning, this, right now, is my opening sentence.

"She prayed for a swift end to the monotone, off key version of ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ – only that or a power outage would do."

Re: Time to Fess Up - How Long Is It Taking You?

Mine feels like it is taking forever, although I'm way behind the 18 month mark. I know what I want to say and do and have my characters say and do, but dagnbabbit, life just keeps getting the better of me! Kids, work, housework, sweeps week and my favorite tv shows, books, movies, my couch, narcole...

Re: introduction

I had a beginning, a middle and an end and interesting characters I loved and and interesting story that I liked. Wasn't that all I needed? Four years later,I am still trying to learn to tell the story the correct way. I still think I tell a damn good story. HA! Sometimes late at night I sneak onto...

Re: The Introduction Thread

Well, second time's the charm. Hi all! I've been following Nathan's blog for awhile now and never realized what a great resource the forums could be. Silly me. My name is Heather and I'm a single mom of two young boys, living and working full time - and in the fall going to school full time - in Ill...
