Re: writers block or procrastination?

Personally, I don't think of writing as being only time spent at the keyboard. If you think like a writer, you're writing every minute, because you're taking in information to use later. Whether it's a facial expression, someone else's words, the way the garage door sounds when it closes and you rea...

Re: Book title inspiration!

Paul,

I considered Million Miles Away but had concerns that it might have a fantasy or science fiction connotation. Maybe that's just me...sort of like "In a Galaxy Far, Far Away..."

Re: One Liners

Okay I think I have it now ... Sarah is a homeless, rocker girl trying to survive the streets which are full of kidnapping, murders, rape, and the occasional free drug hand out just to get to her next gig in hopes of making it big and get back into high school. Maybe. I think it still needs work, b...

Bon Iver is my favorite band to write to...perfect for those times when you need to be poetic.

Re: Bestsellers that don't live up to the hype

not to turn this into Dan Brown Haters Club, but I thought Angels and Demons was one of the worst books ever. I struggled to make it through the first 50 pages and then I just gave up in anger and disgust at the thought of the time I'd wasted (not that I'm bitter or anything). I made it through Da V...

Re: Book title inspiration!

Thanks to everyone for the input. I appreciate the suggestions of new ways to come up with a possible title but also your thoughts on the current one. It helped me analyze what was really bothering me (now it's like we're all on Dr. Phil) and I think I was worried that my title wasn't sexy enough. T...

Book title inspiration!

I swear that finding the title of my book is going to kill me...the thing is written, I've done seven top-to-bottom revisions and now I'm getting feedback from a wider pool of beta readers. But, the title I have right now is the most generic title ever, like it could be the new Katherine Heigl/Jenni...

Re: Query: flight

Thanks in advance for your feedback! Dear Mr. AGENT, Maria Black’s 2,477-day normal streak is destroyed by a song. I find the number distracting--sorry! She hears the latest single from rock star Sam Montgomery on the radio and begins to daydream about him. Perhaps something more interesting than "...

Re: Breaks In and Between Writing Projects

I take forced breaks and they are torture to me. I know they are beneficial in the end, but it still kills me and I do anything I can to find a way to cheat. For me, it takes more discipline to take a break (a real break, a week or longer) than it takes to write every day. I don't like being away fr...

Re: Your favorite writing resources?

Hands down, Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. I would read that book over and over just to hear her voice, but it's extremely helpful too. It's very valuable at the times when you need to be talked off a ledge, when your writing has you in the pits of despair. She's brutally honest about her own ups and d...

Re: Weird Tips?

I wouldn't call mine quirky, but I use music to help put myself back into specific parts of whatever I'm writing. It's extremely helpful if you're trying to write when the kids are poking their heads in your office every 10 minutes. I make playlists in iTunes that provoke specific emotional response...

Re: What do you "do"?

love this...everything from helicopters to heroin I'm a mom and handbag designer/maker. I do make money from time to time as a freelance writer, doing mostly Lifestyle/DIY pieces and once wasted two years shopping a sewing book. My career before mommyhood was in the music industry, doing everything ...

Re: Query for FURY (HELP!!!)

It's strange... I can usually figure out what isn't working in other people's queries, but I flounder when it comes to my own. This query is bleh. I like some of the syntax, but the sentence structure seems too uniform and I'm not sure the plot is coming through, or, if it is, it isn't intriguing e...

Re: What writing disorder do you suffer from?

I get printer's remorse. I'm happy with the MS, after the 50th top-to-bottom revision, and I print it out only to discover it's so much less polished on paper than it is on the screen. How does that happen?

Re: Fantasy Query, feedback please

My overall impression is that your description of the plot is confusing, partly because of the proper nouns you use in your book. It's hard to keep up with what's happening and who's who at the same time (maybe I have limited mental capacity today). Is there a way for you to still give detail, but i...
