Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?

Thanks Steph, I appreciate your perspective. Its definitely something to think about. I have a blog, but its sports (hockey) based, and its a "blogger.com" template. While I think about 100 of my loyal hockey readers would by my book, I don't expect hockey fans to make up the bulk of my readership i...

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world

I sure hope hard paper books don't go the way of the dodo, but it seems like there is a concerned push for it. For me, most telling and worrisome issue is that you really can't replace text on a page. For example, I can edit my memoir on the computer for days on end, working the same 20-40 pages ove...

Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?

Just curious, who does and if it is recommended? Is there a particular genre that is more likely to have a website than others? If you have one, have your benefited?

[Edit] And to add to the question: if you have a website, is it a "blogger.com" site or did you have something built?

If you want to laugh at yourself, just a bit...

I recommend "How I became a famous novelist" by Steve Hely. Its a quick read, pretty funny and more subtle and nuanced than I wanted to admit, but it has me laughing and grimacing all at once. I am not in love with his "prose", but cannot fault him for it, as writing a novel that in format -the memo...

Re: Benefits of attending conferences for finding agent

If you haven't already, make sure you do your due diligence re: the agent and the editor. John, you said it for sure! Finding an editor who works in your genre with a track record is tough!!!! Although I must clarify my post, I asked the agent if she could recommend anyone, once she indicated word ...

Re: Benefits of attending conferences for finding agent

What a cool group of people to chime in on this- all with interesting things to say. And thank you for the positive energy and comments! I will have to check Patricia Holt out, thanks for the tip! The issue of hiring an editor is even more difficult to "suss" out than finding an agent. I would love ...

Re: Benefits of attending conferences for finding agent

Thanks Margo, your advice is much appreciated. Wouldn't you know it, the minute I swiped my credit card through for the conference charge, one of the agents scheduled to review submissions at this same conference responded to my query letter, said if I can get the memoir down to 100,000-120,000 word...

Re: Fix the novel with a scalpel? Or an ax?

My first draft was a 180,000 MS, and I loved every word, could not imagine what would need to be cut or changed. I wanted to move on and immediately begin the sequel. I promptly set it aside, started learning about the query process and sending query letters. I learned that no one wants to read the ...

Re: Personal Rejections

Lots of people here have good advice on the subject. My situation seems to be similar to yours, I have sent about 20 query letters so far, trying hard to target only agents who not only work in my genre, but who seem (based on their client list and website bio) willing to take on my style. For every...

Benefits of attending conferences for finding agent

Hi all, I am wondering about your thoughts on the utility of attending a writer's conference where you can submit materials for one-on-one critique by agents and editors. I just signed up for an upcoming conference and spent gobs of money not just for the conference, but to have an agent and an edit...

Re: Exclusives- how long do I wait before assuming rejection?

Thanks Nathan, and everyone else! I just heard from him, and the request now is for an ms word version of my manuscript. I am a bit leary about sending out an editable document, but have posted a question on that issue in the "Ask Nathan" post. again, its so nice to have feedback from you all, I tha...

Re: How many people do you query?

in my humble, non-represented yet- opinion, I would say keep query-ing until you get an agent! I have a friend who only queried about 10 agents and then gave up. The thing is, you can't give up until every last agent has rejected you! You cant think of it as rejection, but more of finding someone wh...

Re: Ask Nathan

Hi Nathan, First I'd like to thank you for these forums and your website, both have been very helpful during this fall through the looking glass, you call finding an agent. Second I am wondering if it is appropriate for an agent to request that an author send a full manuscript in MS Word format. I h...

Re: Exclusives- how long do I wait before assuming rejection?

Ok, thanks all for your input! Each of you are very helpful, and I genuinely appreciate that you took the time to respond. I will be patient and give him another month...its not like I can't use the time to edit, or research more agents.

cheers!
