Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I make mistakes a lot, and I know there are plenty of other people who do the same thing. I just wrote a post about how we can use the lessons we learned to improve the characters we write: http://gilesth.blogspot.com/2010/11/mistakes.html

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I wrote a post about why I think the classics are important. And it's not necessarily because they're well-written by modern standards. http://gilesth.blogspot.com/2010/11/classics.html

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Today I wrote a blog about NaNoWriMo. It's something I do every year, though this is the first year I considered participating. http://gilesth.blogspot.com/2010/11/nanowrimo.html

Re: Why can't I do this?

Everyone has been incredibly helpful! Thank you so much :D Polymath, based on your comments, I'm going to reexamine my book, both to rediscover what I should focus on for my query, but also to see if there are ways to improve the manuscript itself. The great thing about this part of my process is th...

Re: Why can't I do this?

The problem I've run into is that, while Chris goes through all of those things, it's been hammered into my head that the most important 250 words (the "maximum" length for a proper query) are those that describe the main plot, the driving force that brings the hero to these life-changing conclusion...

Re: How to know you're not a writer?

Heh...writing can be quite depressing at times. Believe me, I've been feeling the same way for a few weeks, too. I even posted about in this forum. You're not alone in your frustration, and don't throw away your book. Maybe take a break from it, write something new, and then come back to it with tha...

Re: Why can't I do this?

It doesn't seem realized in the one sentence synopsis and I infer it's not realized in the query or the novel. Two, because Drake's heroic nobleness is given without representing his self-serving agenda(s) as well, he feels like a one-dimensional adventure hero character. Three, that nobleness with...

Re: Why can't I do this?

Thanks, everyone. I'm feeling a bit better now, but it's still rough. It doesn't help that I keep getting called into work on the days that I set aside for writing. I don't seem to get anything done anymore. I'm not gonna destroy my computer :), but I still feel like my head is going to implode.

Why can't I do this?

So I've written queries before, and I've gotten great feedback. However, I'm not getting any good responses, so it's time to re-write. My question is, why can't I write queries? This should be easy. I can tell someone what my book is about in one sentence, (Chris Drake, a half-dragon dragon-slayer, ...

Has an agent gotten your name wrong?

So, I sent out a query, took the effort to research the agent's client list, learned his likes and dislikes for submissions, and I took the time to research what kinds of authors he wanted to add to his client list. I think it's safe to assume I got his name right, though for some unfathomable reaso...

Today I wrote about how important I think it is for us, as writers, to support those local authors who are working hard to promote their small-press titles. So go out and Support Your Local Authors! http://gilesth.blogspot.com/2010/10/syla.html

Re: Music Suggestions for Writing

I listen to the Harry Potter soundtracks, DJ Krush (Japanese guy notable for being the first DJ to use a turntable as a musical instrument, rather than just loops and playback), and random instrumental Jazz (not "smooth jazz" which is actually more New Age...real Jazz from the 30s - 50s). If I'm in ...
