Re: Quill Publishes on Amazon

I think Margo is right when she says self-publishers must think in terms of quick releases to build visibility and audience. I'm on a different time track from her, but I do respect the idea, and obviously you do, too. *Brainy Smurf voice* I was right. I was riiight! Ahem, I mean to say congrats on...

Re: When You Have to Create a Whole New Realm

You need a 115-page template.

No, I'm not joking.

Stop laughing.

Re: The Coffee Shop - OCTOBER

I am so freaking proud of you!!! *warm fuzzies, YUM!* On a totally unrelated side note, my ex-hubby took up writing last year . I helped him edit his very first short story for submission. It's going to be published in an anthology shortly, and I can't decide whether I want to put out a hit on him ...

Re: The Coffee Shop - OCTOBER

My first year self-publishing under my pen name is almost over. Last year: 400,000 words roughly 60,000 copies sold (I lost some data when my thumbdrive broke and don't have time to go through my records right now) ummm...more than twice the average family income for my area. Let's put it that way. ...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

I just found out from a business contact that B&N did this to several self-published FANTASY books last year, to remove them from the bestseller list. So it's not just that sleezy romance stuff. Until the conversation this morning, I didn't know how common it is to SELL spots on bestseller lists.

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

This makes me sad, but I'm not surprised by it. Everyone wants erotica writers to write what they write, but no one wants to admit to loving them. It's a dirty little book store secret. When I worked at a B&N in college I would watch people stalk the teeny tiny erotica section like they were casing...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

In case anyone was wondering how this turned out... One of the two authors hit with this in September indicated her sales never recovered. The other received an apology from B&N, who tried to make it sound like an accident despite the fact they were caught doing this intentionally once before. When ...

I never officially joined the challenge, but my work count so far is 36,700. I might hit 40k with the one day left.

Re: Major Blunder with New E-Book

You know, Hillsy and bcomet and I are just speaking theoretically, since none of us have read the book. It might be really helpful to get some professional feedback from people who have actually read at least a portion of it. Perhaps you could submit it to a workshop or a conference where you'd have...

Hillsy wrote:(I've just started re-reading the Wheel of Time in preparation for the final book in January).
If you ever get the chance, you should get one of his editors to discuss what they really thought of that series and similiar "uneditable" work.

Re: Major Blunder with New E-Book

Speaking purely as a reader, I wouldn't buy a book of this length. I would assume (fairly or unfairly--and I haven't looked at your book, so this isn't specific to your situation) that the writer lacked a grasp and control of story structure.

Re: Think Tank: Fashioning an "approved" stamp

Bad bad bad, extremely presumptuous and naive idea. I won't spend time going over all the reasons this wouldn't work, hasn't worked, and shouldn't work. I will only point out the foremost reason this will never work. Writers are extremely jealous of one another's success . Think about that. Imagine ...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

The customer is always right, right? - but doing so in the manner of a prize idiot. If the titles were in the bestseller list, several hundred customers per day were purchasing the titles. But those customers are wrong? Taking the facts as reported (B&N knocking some books down the top 100 list so ...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

it's B&N manipulating their bestseller list. I'm a regular participant on the B&N forums, and I can guess that this is due to the regular pressure on those forums for B&N to "stop peddling smut to our kids." So smut includes erotic romance with no naughty words in the title and a cover tamer than m...
