Re: Strunk & White... what do you think of them?

Mira, I think avoiding this book is terrible advice. 1.) It's incredibly short. In general this should be a poor reason in favor of it, except I put it at the top of the list because the attention span of people today (mine included) is not what it was 20 years ago, let alone 91. Compare S&W with ev...

Re: What do you "do"?

If you can't work 80h/week on a sustainable level, you just can't do it. Depressed me a bit too, but things happen for a reason... LIKE GIVING ME THE TIME TO WRITE A NOVEL! :D A good friend of mine left med school after 2-3 years. That was his reason, too. Your life is your work, which for some peo...

Funniest book you've read?

I'm a big fan of funny, but it is virtually impossible for me to find a funny book. Been like that for a long time. I know funny is subjective, but I don't think my standards are outrageous. I've seen a ton more funny movies than read funny books. As far as I'm concerned, there's Gary Larson, Dougla...

Re: Your favorite writing resources?

I've found stuff in these items to be most helpful - not everything in every one, but something in every one: Books Plot - Ansen Dibell Art Of Dramatic Writing - Lajos Egri Time and Narrative Vol. I, II, III - Paul Ricoeur Zen in the Art of Writing - Ray Bradbury How to Write Like Chekhov: Advice an...

Re: Strunk & White... what do you think of them?

Erin, I've got a couple major UK grammar books that advocate the 's : Oxford Basic English Usage : We sometimes just add an apostrophe (') to a singular noun ending in -s: Socrates' ideas . But 's is more common: Charles's wife . Fowler's : Uses for the possessive case in English names and surnames...

Re: Strunk & White... what do you think of them?

Didn't see the comments you mentioned, but I've been a writer/copy editor most my professional life and most the arguments against this great book are embarrassingly bad. Within the past year, someone published an article skewering S&W, I can't remember who it was or what publication it was. I belie...

Re: Premise

Premise is a loose concept. You'll find various definitions as it applies to writing. Some say it's the spark of a story ( What happens when a guy and an orangutan blah, blah, blah. ) Some say it's close to theme, which is yet another vague term, and which sorta kinda follows the definition of premi...

Incredible Hamlet on PBS

On April 28 , courtesy the RSC. Aired on the BBC just after last Christmas. Got my DVR ready, can't wait because only time I've seen this was on a laptop a while back. David Tennant is Hamlet, probably the best performance I've ever seen in that role. A caveat - some Shakespeare plays are my all-ti...

Re: Video of the Recent Volcano Eruption in Iceland

Been watching some videos, too, pretty cool. Here's another good one - how to actually pronounce the @#$%! thing. Eyjafjallajökull http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jq-sMZtSww This the most convoluted volcanic name in modern eruption history. I still have trouble saying it after hearing it said proper...

Re: Which celeb/s have you met?

KT, it's hard to top my ignorance about chess tournaments, so I apologize in advance - but is there a decent chance of actually playing the greats of the world if your skills aren't so great? For example, does a Kasparov get thrown in with all the riff-raff in the beginning, and perhaps by luck of t...
