Re: Narrative vs. Dialogue

I tend to lean towards being dialogue heavy as well, Wilderness. I think it is because I write historical fiction; I feel the best way to convey the period is through the conversations the characters have. As a reader, I like dialogue better as well. I get very irritated when an author lapsing into ...

The Great Genre Debate

Is anyone else out there struggling with their genre? I recently discussed my woes on my blog and was wondering who else might be having the same trouble. My conundrum arises from the increasingly fluid definition of historical romance. Traditionally, the genre was relegated to the romance aisle at ...

Re: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction): New Version - Page 3

I probably should just quit nitpicking, but receiving feedback is so addictive! Dear Agent, As a pack of renegade Union soldiers disappear into the cold Kentucky night, nineteen year old Julienne Dalton watches her home burn, her father lying dead at her feet. Now an orphan, she is determined to re...

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Thanks Quill! I was hoping you would weigh in again since the query has changed so much from last time. And thanks for picking up on the details that no one else seems to notice. :-)

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Thanks for your comments, Akila. I've made a few changes to the newest version. Apparently, I left out some important stuff at the end and I've fixed it. Hopefully that will answer your questions.

Thanks again!

Re: New Query: REDEEMING GRACE

Hello, everyone. I've been watching and absorbing everyone's great feedback on the other queries. Now my time to start sending one out is drawing near. I'd appreciate your feedback! Dear (Agent), Jessica Hartley and Grace Sullivan are roommates and best friends. Life for both is at an all-time high...

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Thanks Wilderness! Those links were excellent. After cogitating over the advice in them, I put together this. I think it shows a bit more of Julienne's voice. I think it's hard to capture: she's a southern belle with proper manners, but she also has a slight sarcastic edge to her. She is unique in ...

Re: Reading as writers

I have been a voracious reader in the past. In the last year or so, I've been so focused on my writing, that my brain barely has the energy to comprehend someone else's writing. But I've recently embarked on a tour of reading or reading everything that I have been putting off for the last year. But ...

Re: Anyone up for a Meet 'n' Greet?

You guys can tentatively count me in. I say tentatively as it will depend upon me breaking out of my stinky low paying bureaucratic job by then. I keep throwing job apps on the wall and getting interviews...something got to stick eventually!

I would love to meet everyone...and see Vegas!

Re: Those ghastly -ly words

Adverbs are inevitable. And when you used wisely, can conveyed more about a scene than if not used. But with that being said, I did a search of my MS for 'ly" and looked at each instance. I thought about whether or not I could use one word to describe what I meant instead of the action and the adver...

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Glj— This first paragraph was serving as my log line, so that’s why I mentioned going to England, etc. I have three options: Leave it vague, expound upon it, or drop it altogether. I chose the log line method after reading an article on Agent Query, but now that I think about it, it seems that a lo...

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Ok, I've worked this over a little more. See what you all think. As always, thank you for your comments, help, and patience! When nineteen year old Julienne Dalton decides to take down the Union after a band of renegade soldiers kill her father, she doesn’t count on falling in love with the enemy, ...

MUCH better...but I think there is still too many names being bandied about. See below. All right--thanks for your suggestions! Here's another go-round: It’s been a century since the Collapse, and the Colony is thriving. Seventeen-year-old Norah Falconer is set to apprentice under her father as Cou...

Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)

Thanks Wilderness! I was hoping you would comment on this new version, and in fact, you echo the same sentiments my writing partner had. I am having an extremely difficult time conveying the essence of the characters. I guess I take for granted that the actions described throughout the query indicat...

Re: Thinking of starting a blog.....but a question

You have to start somewhere. I started blogging just a.) to get my name out there in case of this writing stuff worked out and b.) I find it fun to share my thoughts. As others mentioned, as you comment on people's blogs to raise your readership. That has worked a little for me. I got nominated for ...
