Re: Writers Who Run

I run as well. I did my first 5K in May and was pretty chuffed with the results. I finished within the first half of all women runners, though I tend to be a bit slow. I'm working on getting my mile under 10 minutes right now. I was hoping to do another 5K next month but have decided to pass and los...

Re: Is a low-selling self-published book considered baggage?

Personally, I think he should be fine as long as he doesn't mention it. If a future novel pulls in agent interest then they will most likely dig up the book at some point (or maybe not). People fail to get representation for many reasons. In my case, my novel (now self-published) was the wrong time ...

Re: 10 Book-Marketing Techniques Which Annoy Potential readers

#5...definitely #5. I just complained on my Facebook yesterday about authors who post their book as the answer to any message board thread that even has the smallest resemblance to something in their book. SO annoying. I see it the most on the Goodreads boards and a few Facebook groups I have joined...

Re: Are Publishers Going Too Far?

Jane Austen saucy? Hardly. I've read book after book about her, walked in her footsteps, etc and that wouldn't be a word I would use to describe her. Insightful, sarcastic, irreverent... I think modern society would like to think she was saucy but in the end, I don't think so. She doubt she would ha...

Are Publishers Going Too Far?

I asked this question on my blog yesterday after reading that an e-publisher intends to release erotic re-writes of many classic novels including Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey , as well as Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre . Personally I think this is sacriledge but I've always t...

Re: Question about using real places in WIPs

I don't know if I would use real shop or school names, but using names of towns, cities, etc should cause a problem. I wen to great lengths to research real towns/villages for my historical. I did use a real church name and I thought that it shouldn't cause a huge problem since it is a church. I jus...

Re: CreateSpace, LuLu, SmashWords...Which One?

Thanks all for the input. I just managed to clear the autovetter at Smashwords...after two days of banging my head...I mean re-formatting my MS. I've uploaded to CreateSpace but it seems to be more concerned with how the MS will look in print. But I don't want to pursue print publication at this tim...

Re: Writing Sins

My characters "look" at everything. They do stuff with their hands, and I tend to describe emotion through their eyes a lot, but my goodness do they "look" at everything, all the time. It's ridiculous. (They also like to "smile", "grin", "glance", and "glare".) Another good one. My characters smile...

Re: Writing Sins

Be careful, because it is needed sometimes. I always check whether it is correct or not by removing the "that _____" clause -- if the sentence loses meaning it means "that" is correct. "Movies that are violent are not good for children." If you remove "that are violent" the sentence doesn't make se...

Re: Writing Sins

The vice president at my first job out of college had a huge issue with the word "that" so I learned it's use pretty quickly  I still fall into the habit of double spacing after periods. When I went through my manuscript and did a find-replace changing all . + double space to . + single space ...

Writing Sins

I'm doing the last pass through my MS before uploading it to SmashWords. I've discovered my infinite love for the word "that" WHICH is apparently a writing no-no. I've been working all morning using "find and replace" to fix the problem. Nothing helps your word count more than deleting a thousand in...

Re: Family interference

I wouldn't say that I have family support...just acceptance. It feels like my dad doesn't take me seriously. Of course, he's one of those duty bound types. Get a job, keep and stay focused on said job....FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. My mom only has a small tolerance for my obsessing about certain writ...

Re: Writing in 1st and 3rd

OMG...so I'm going through and changing the tense and all of the sudden my delete button hangs up (or something) and 20 pages gets eaten! I guess it's kind of funny because I'm screaming and carrying on, punching buttons and trying to stop it. And my hubby comes running downstairs (probably thinking...

Re: Writing in 1st and 3rd

Thanks for the moral support, folks. I know it will be worth it, but I'm hating my life right now! I'm going to go bang my head against the wall right now.

Re: Writing in 1st and 3rd

Polymath, you just blew my mind. :D I'm thinking that I should just bite the bullet and change it all to third. It kind of makes me want to cry to think about all the work it will take, but it's starting to sound necessary. I've had several betas have at it; I can only think of one who objected to t...
