Re: Have your blog reading/commenting habits changed?

I'm like Mary, I just started blogging (again) fairly recently. I enjoy it, because sometimes I have thoughts that are just a little too big to fit in a tweet. (I'm a big time Twitter lover) As a reader I feel more of a connection to writers who blog on a fairly regular basis. (I've noticed most of ...

Re: Query Critique - Overcast Shadows - REVISED

LOL, you're like the Energizer bunny with the re-writes. It sounds good. I'd still suggest thinking of another way to reword the half-human half-brother thing, in order not to have so many "-" in a row, but otherwise I think it's look pretty darn close. I'd say to see what others have to say and the...

Re: Query Critique - Overcast Shadows - REVISED

Wow, that was a quick revise. Here's just a couple more thoughts, but I definitely think this is shaping up very nicely and you're almost there! Dear Agent, Vitiosus is the prince of Lasserta, a nation of cold-hearted beings striving for power. Raised by his father with a hatred and anger towards hu...

Re: Book of the Watchers-query

Some of my thoughts -- and please take them with a grain of salt, because I am by no means a query expert. I think your problem is like most of us... our explanation makes perfect sense to us, but sounds pretty vague to someone who doesn't know the story. (the agent) Hope some of it helps! Dear agen...

Re: Query Critique - Overcast Shadows - REVISED

Here are just a couple of my thoughts. Hope they fit the scenario. And this version is much improved from the previous ones!! Dear Agent, Vitiosus is the prince of the Lasserta, a nation of cold-hearted beings striving for power, yet he finds himself longing for peace and freedom. Raised by his fath...

Re: Throat-clearing & Head-banging

I think the part that confuses a lot of us when we hear about starting with action is that ... action doesn't necessarily mean a physical confrontation or drama of some sort. It just means having your character doing something worthwhile that gets the story started. I think we've got ourselves condi...

Re: Will my MC's name kill my chances?

I don't want to pile on, but if we're being honest ... it isn't a name I'm crazy about.

Even something like Vitios has a better ring to it, IMO. There is something about the 'sus' at the end that trips up my brain when I read the name.

Re: Life... and full manuscript request

Congrats! Those are some pretty good stats for so early in the game. I think "reply promptly" is pretty much code for "don't take so long to get back to me that I forgot why I requested this material in the first place". I can't imagine if you need a week in order to get it together and send it off ...

Re: How Do You Know When You're REALLY Done?

Thanks Nathan for the link ... that post of Jenn's is getting close to where I am, so that helped a lot! To everyone else. Thanks for all the other suggestions too. I've had an eclectic group of betas read the ms, and I've gotten tremendous feedback on the story. I have zero doubt that the story lin...

How Do You Know When You're REALLY Done?

Question for you guys. How the heck do you know when you're truly done with revising your manuscripts? I wrote mine late last summer. I revised several times over the winter. Believed I was ready to query in February. And on my own, in March, realized I still needed to do at least one more real buff...

Re: Ask Nathan

Okay Nathan, I could really use your opinion on a synopsis question. Say a story is set in modern time, but has large portions of flashbacks to the past -- like The Notebook (though I have to admit I've only seen the movie, so if the book wasn't written that way I'm SOL). What are your thoughts on t...

I read that wrong the first time. I thought you were referring to the cat and two horses as the ankle biters. I was thinking "how freaking short are her horses?"

Re: First request for a full MS... rejected

Ah, darn it. I'd offer to go beat them up if it'd make you feel better, but said agent might be on my future query list so I can't. All teasing aside, I can imagine how it's gotta sting a little lot, but at least you know your manuscript is worthy of a full request. Now it's just a matter of getting...

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?

Anne Rice's The Queen of the Damned . I'm sure I've read it about a half a dozen times, and I'm not much of a re-reader either.

Re: Co-writing and the pitfalls thereof

If that link fails, I think you should knock your partner up alongside the head with your oar, and before he/she comes to leave them on the shore. Whatever you do, don't try to split the kayak in half ... it never works anymore that way. (As you can see, I really didn't have any valuable advice. Thi...
