Re: Why do you reread books?

I re-read books because the characters managed to wiggle their way into my heart, and it feels like visiting with old friends to see them again.

Re: New query for The Devil You Don't Know

Hey Terry, I really like the premise! Sounds like a book I wouldn't mind reading. Here are a couple of my suggestions. Dear [AGENT], When Michael Reed was nine years old, he killed his alcoholic father with a Louisville Slugger. He did it to save his mother , not He had no way of knowing he was too ...

Re: What's with Author X's editor, man?

I have two different answers depending on which hat I'm wearing. As a Writer - I don't believe it is ultimately my editor's responsibility to make sure my manuscript is as clean as possible. Hopefully, they will have someone in place to help me when I go a little crazy with the commas at times, but ...

Re: Beta Basics

Hey Quill, I actually posted something along those lines today on my blog. Here are a couple of the things that have worked for me so far. -- Before getting any betas I would determine what you want from them first. It's a lot easier to find people who are willing to give you their overall impressio...

Re: Query-Akasha REVISED

Just some of my thoughts and suggestions. All right, I finally revised my letter. Let me know what you think of the changes. Dear Agent, In 1879, sixteen-year-old Nichole leads the a life most of her peers desire. A big house, a mother who spoils her, and she’s betrothed to the wealthiest man in tow...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

It's kind of neat to see the way a first line really sets up a story!

Okay, here's mine:

Re: The Tickler File

I don't have a Tickler file, as much as I have an old story idea graveyard. I've been writing for years off and on, but it's only been this past year that I've learned how to write well and finish a story line through to the end. Most of the old ideas are sitting there in that graveyard waiting for ...

Re: So do you have any foes on this site?

I saw that myself... but I didn't do anything with it. I worried that if I friended a couple people then others would find out and feel bad. Then I'd have to friend EVERYONE to keep from hurting feelings. And if I was going to end up friending everybody then what's the difference between that and ju...

Re: When bookstores steal your novels

I haven't experienced it in a bookstore, but I have run into a poster here on Nathan's forums who had a story line that sounded a LOT like mine. We've just recently become beta readers for each other. Though we're in the early stages it's clear to see that we took a similar sounding idea and went tw...

Re: Novel Length

I agree with what a lot of the others have already said. I know it isn't what you want to hear, but that's just too much story, especially for a debut novel. I'm fairly certain you're going to run into automatic rejections because of word count alone. Either give it a hard, brutal look and find a wa...

Re: FORUM NEOPHYTE

It would probably be less confusing if you type in the text you want to mark in a different color and then select the color you want it in. When you're typing within your post all you are going to see is the weird "color" language. Those are the tags that let the website know you want that text to a...

Re: Word Counts

Go with the word count Microsoft gives you. The 250 words per page guideline is typically a rough calculation way for people who don't have access to a word counter in their writing program.

If MSWord tells you 81K, that's what I'd put on your query letter.

Re: How important is a working title?

I agree with the others. Try to pick something that involves the MC. Maybe even a two-four word phrase in the book. The odds are high whatever you choose will ultimately be changed on the publishing end of things ... but if you don't come up with some sort of name it may send the signal to an agent ...

*raises hand* I haven't done it as much since I got into the later stages of my revision. (Now, I just hem and haw over whether each sentence sounds its best) But while I was writing it, and then in the first revision of the rough draft, I had several "this is crap!" moments ... along with several "...
