Re: Question on Etiquite...

And the oracle speaks! Thanks for the advice as always, Nathan. I actually have another question along these lines. I have my ms with an agent who asked for a two week exclusive that ends this week. I wasn't actually planning to give any exclusives, but two weeks is no skin off my back, and I really...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

Strictly speaking, you can take as long as you want. But you might want to take a look at this post:

For some agents, tardiness is not really a dealbreaker, but for others, it makes all the difference.

Re: First request for a full MS! YES!

Thank you, everyone! And JustineDell, I hope you're including yourself in that statement - I'm sure you'll be getting many more full requests where the last two came from. Congratulations!!!! We would love to see the query that got this, if you care to share it!!! Best of luck and wishes for a great...

First request for a full MS... rejected

After seven rejections and one silence-means-no, I just got a request for a full! And I thought I was aiming WAY too high with this particular agent! The chances that he'd actually ask to rep me are astronomical, but I couldn't care less - I'm absolutely psyched. And I can't seem to stop using excla...

Re: How do you stop taking rejection personally?

At least my expectations are getting lower and lower. It used to be "I'd be so happy if I could get published!" Then it was "I'd be so happy if I could get an agent!" And now it's "I'd be so happy if someone would ask for a partial!" That's sad, but I can see myself heading in that same direction i...

Re: How do you stop taking rejection personally?

-- make that two out of five agents who rejected the new query! And this one sent a form rejection two hours after I e-mailed him. Ouch. At least my expectations are getting lower and lower. It used to be "I'd be so happy if I could get published!" Then it was "I'd be so happy if I could get an agen...

Re: How do you stop taking rejection personally?

I don't take rejection personally, but the frustration is hard to deal with. It's tough when you do all the research, look into which agents are interested in what you're writing, take everyone's personal query likes and dislikes into account, and have people in the know tear your query apart multip...

Re: QUERY: SPIRIT HILL - Revision #2

This is fantastic. I would add a colon after "unspoken vow" ("She swears an unspoken vow: no more babies") just to make it flow a bit better, but you've done a fantastic job of boiling your novel down. I want to read your book when it comes out!

Re: QUERY: BELLE (YA-FANTASY)

Ooooh, just a quick nitpick and I think you're golden! In the first sentence of your plot summary, that "when" clause is dependent, so you need a comma instead of a semicolon. Otherwise, this looks fantastic. Good luck!

Re: QUERY: Black Hole Son (2nd draft)

This is well-written and intriguing, but I think you would benefit from cutting some of these details out. Maybe it's because you've got two concurrent plots going on, but you reference several different scenes throughout your synopsis and the effect is rather disjointed. I would suggest a shorter a...

Re: Rejection: how do you know if it's the idea or the query?

Thanks Holly! A friend in the business offered to look it over as well, so hopefully that'll get me somewhere. Kniki, I think the interests of agents and publishers are so fluid, something like that could go wrong very easily. At the time you start writing your book the industry may have a thing for...

Re: Rejection: how do you know if it's the idea or the query?

Holly, I had it critiqued a couple times before I sent out my first round... I'm just trying to figure out what would indicate that I need more. If I don't get any interest from this round, I'll let this forum have a go.

Rejection: how do you know if it's the idea or the query?

Hey guys! I've only been on the agent hunt for a few weeks, but I have a question that some of you hopefully will have some insight into. Like many of you, I'm sure, I was pretty much promised that as long as I write a good pitch blurb, of course the agent will want to see my sample pages. And if I ...
