Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?

My favorite book as a child was ALANNA, THE FIRST ADVENTURE by Tamora Pierce. On the inside cover I had placed a check mark for each time I'd read it. I still have my original copy with my four check marks inside. I read the entire series again recently and fell in love with the stories all over aga...

Re: CEDRIC (MG Fantasy)

Thanks everyone!

I'm actually writing Cedric as a stand-alone middle-grade novel. But if that doesn't work out I could see adapting it to a chapter book series. Great idea, Ryan.

Re: CEDRIC (MG Fantasy)

Thank you Ryan. Yes, there is a girl, but it's not so much a romantic relationship as it is a very close friendship.

Re: Strong Voice vs. Invisible Writing

Mira, Thank you for your explanation. I see the distinction now. My question, in a way, is more a response to the myriad "rules" out there that we all stumble upon in an attempt to improve our craft. Some people declare the rules as though they were gospel while others say screw the rules. I'm somew...

Strong Voice vs. Invisible Writing

I've noticed that while agents' and editors' taste vary greatly, many agree that what they look for in a story is strong voice. And yet, many writers are advised to make their writing invisible- in other words, the writing should not draw attention to itself. I wonder if there is a distinction here ...

Re: CEDRIC (MG Fantasy)

Thanks Ken and Gonzo

I asked my son (he's nine) and he knows what stalactites are. I'll quiz the kids at the bus stop on Monday though. Thanks again.

Re: Suburban Fantasy Query

I think this sounds like a fun story. I'm definitely intrigued by the concept. I would suggest adding a stronger sense of Elizabeth's character by giving a few specific details about her involvement and reactions to the story events.

Good luck with this!

Re: QUERY: The Exciting Life and Death of The Amazing Henry

Todd, I know absolutely nothing about queries for short story collections but I just wanted to say that your collection sounds delightful. The only suggestions I can make are that you might want to mention straight off that this is a short story collection in your letter. If the editors/agents expec...

Re: ECHTRA : BLOOD MAGICK - FIRST PAGE

Wandaduploov, I think your first page provides a very intriguing start to your novel. You’ve written some vivid imagery and conveyed a sense that something ominous lurks in the shadows waiting to claim its first victim. Like Ryan, I found the young man waking to be a bit awkward. You might try summa...
