Re: The art of the one sentence synopsis

Gah!! If I even start thinking of writing a one sentence pitch I start twitching and my brain instantly reverts into kindergarten mode. I've tried since Sommer posted this to write one for my current WIP, but...yeahno. I've got nothing.

When You Have to Create a Whole New Realm

Fellow sci-fi and fantasy writers - this one's for you! I've stalled a bit finishing up my latest WIP because the last 1/4 of the book takes place in the hive of a spiritual parasite. It isn't a place, per se, but more like a labyrinthine cave of spirits and thought-munching creatures in the middle ...

How cool! (Er, for strictly fictional purposes, of course. ;) ) Do you happen to have the link handy?
No, Liz, I don't. But if you PM me your email address I can send you the PDF.

Re: Trying to nail down aspects for a query

Exactly. You're definitely on the right track now! :)

When you're happy with it, make sure to post this in the query feedback forum, as well.

Re: Trying to nail down aspects for a query

I actually think you're on the right track in more ways than you think. --- 30 days ago, Gavin Preacher's sister disappeared. There were no clues. There were no witnesses. The police have all but given up, but not Preacher. He can't. Not now. Not ever. She's his center, his best friend, his only fam...

Re: Trying to nail down aspects for a query

He is not going to give up. Not Now. Not ever. Whetever the personal cost is, he does not care...Preacher believes in economy of words and maximixing action. He left home at an early age and took all the hate he had for his father and had a stint in the service to try and learn routine and order an...

Re: I've been working on my synopsis and,

Its mainly an issue when I want to look up things about the military, understanding ground tactics and guerilla warfare. Things like how logistics work, and other fine details. With my other projects it was always as easy as, "I want to understand 19th century france legal system, so i'll buy the N...

Re: Trying to nail down aspects for a query

If those are Preacher's issues, then that's who he is. You can't rewrite the character to make the query sound more interesting. And really, you can take any character (or real person for that matter) and list out their issues, and they'd all sound like a bunch of basket cases. Try mixing some stren...

Re: Agent requirements question

When they ask for a synopsis they are not specific as to what kind. Would you send a 1-page, 6-page...or??? If the length of the synopsis isn't specified, go with 1-2 pages. That's pretty safe for just about anything. Would I send the 2 page prologue as well as the first three chapters, or just the...

Re: All time Favorite movies

And I never thought I'd meet another person who likes the Finney version of Scrooge! Count another in here. I grew up watching this movie every Thanksgiving night - it's the offical kick-off of the Christmas season in my family. I absolutely have to watch this movie first every year. It's a require...

Re: What T.V. shows are you watching?

I'm not a big fan of TV in and of myself, but my husband is a huge TV/movie guy so it's a compromise. He's awesome, though, and has been picking shows I actually enjoy. Though, we never watch them live. We get them from Netflix or borrow discs from my sister, so we're always at least a season behind...

Re: Guilty Pleasure Books

I wouldn't say guilty pleasure has to be something that is generally ill-received. Guilty pleasure is anything you're embarrassed to admit you enjoy, for any given reason. So yeah, the Inheritance Cycle would qualify there, in my opinion. My guilty pleasure is the In Death series by J.D. Robb (aka N...

Re: The hardest part of the novel

Here's the thing, though: even if this particular novel turns out to not be "your" genre, that doesn't mean a) you're doing it wrong, or b) it was a waste of time. I wrote an adult high fantasy for my first novel, a MG low fantasy for my second, both third-person with male protagonists. My third no...
