Re: Time to Fess Up - How Long Is It Taking You?

I'm almost done with revisions on my current WIP and it's been 2 years, 1 month. I had to take a writing sabaticcal due to some health issues which ate away six months, but that's still a decent amount of time for one project. It should be ready to enter queryland this summer, though, and I can get ...

The Dissection of Rejection

While browsing through my agent/editor/author blogs over my morning cup o' joe, I got a link to this wonderful article. It's a series of other links that are incredibly encouraging for those of us who are just tired of getting rejections. May these bolster your writer's spirit as much as they have b...

Re: Death to synopses

Synopses are evil. And not just evil, but EEEEE-vile. I tried writing one for my first novel and it took me days upon days upon days (it was several years ago so I don't remember the exact number). I ended up with two synopses, and I hated them both. How can you cover everything you think you should...

Re: Funniest book you've read?

The Sex Lives of Cannibals by J. Maartin Troost. It's a travel memoir (which I usually don't like) about him and his wife relocating to a tiny desert island in the Pacific Ocean and all the misadventures they find there. It's the only non-fiction book I've ever liked and I recommend it to just abou...

Re: Fine-Tuning Your Novel

I agree with gonzo. When you read through and you don't get the "yikes, that needs to be fixed!" on anything more than a word or phrase, then you're ready. I know it feels like you'll never get there, but it will eventually happen. Just don't get caught up in the details too much. If there's somethi...

Re: When Should You Feel Comfortable Calling Yourself a WRITER?

I call myself a writer, and I've found that not a whole lot of people put much stock into it. They either get excited and ask if you have anything published or just shrug you off as an idealist or someone wishing for something they'll never achieve (the whole "yeah, I've always wanted to write a boo...

Re: Bestsellers that don't live up to the hype

Also... and sci-fi fans may hate me for saying this... but I think Orson Scott Card should have stopped writing his Ender books after Ender's Game. I have found that each book gets progressively worse. I skipped the last two releases because I didn't want to waste my money. I totally agree!! I read...

Re: 40,000 words in and I change it to YA!!

I've done the same thing, Robin. In one of my WIPs my opening scene was one of...well, let's just say I wanted my readers to know what a womanizing @$$ this guy is... When I went back to it after a few months I couldn't even read it. I had to delete almost all of it and clean it up in more ways than...

Re: Strong Female Characters

1. Make sure they know what they want and are willing to work to attain it, even against the odds. 2. Strong female characters never let a man dictate their life for them. Love and companionship can still flourish, but they will not change themselves or let go of their dreams just to be with someone...

Re: Favorite drink while writing (or procrastinating)?

I'm with you gonzo, I was coming in to say a nice steaming mug of English Breakfast, Green Ginger, or Mandarin Orange Spice (those are TEAS for you uncultured people out there :-P ). I get sleepy when I drink and I can't have any alcohol on the medication I take anyway so I steer clear of it. When I...

Re: The Tickler File

Instead of a file I have a 4x4 foot dry erase board hanging in my office. It's divided into columns with each detailing as much as I know about the storylines waiting to be written. The very bottom corner is reserved for words/phrases/random ideas that have no home yet but I'd like to use one day. I...
