Re: Recommended Fantasy Under 150K
Lisa Shearin's novels are right around 100k I think. Magic Lost, Trouble Found is the first book.

Re: Third person point of view with multiple viewpoints
Nora Roberts (writing as J.D. Robb) will change POV in the middle of a paragraph occasionally. Frank Herbert's Dune often has multiple POV changes in a paragraph, though that novel is pretty out-of-date but still a science fiction classic. Kelley Armstrong changes POV nearly each chapter in her most...

Re: YA mystery VS A mystery
Adult protagonist = adult genre. Even having a 19-year-old protagonist is pushing it for YA. YA is typically concerned with 12-18 years, but some publishers will consider YA to be 14-18. You say your protagonist is a child in a lot of ways, but don't mistake immaturity in a protagonist as being a qu...

Re: YA mystery VS A mystery
What age is the protagonist? I've found that content and length don't matter so much when compared to the protagonist. If you're protagonist is an adult, then it's adult mystery. If your protagonist is a teen and handles the mystery as a teen, then it's YA. If you're worried about "content,&quo...

Re: Query Length
The guideline for most queries, even by genre, seems to be that you should be able to fit it onto one page, even when including salutations, signatures, and contact information. The same holds true for email queries. I've read quite a few sci-fi/fantasy queries and they all fit the one-page guidelin...

Re: Editing - Hardcopy or computer?
I do both hard copy and computer, but what I've noticed when I edit is that I have to do it in a format different from when I wrote it. That means either printing it out and hand editing, or changing paragraph spacing, or using track changes. As long as I do something different from the format that ...

Re: Query for LOST LUGGAGE
Dear Agent, By mistake, seventeen-year-old Gracie picks up someone else's luggage at the airport, which she later and discovers that there's $100,000 in it. Her best friend, [delete comma] Amara pressures her to keep the money, convincing her that the two of them could split it and splurge the cash ...

Re: Peer Review of a Query
There's actually two other plots that Nic has to work through in this book: he has to learn to stand up to bullies and stop them from picking on him, and he needs to learn how to control his power. I see, now, that I really DO need to reword how I state Nic's personal question because, as far as th...

Re: Query Help - Hacked
Lonely hacker Audrey Frincke gets shot at the mall by a ninja. Was it the zombie Alice in Wonderland costume Audrey was wearing, or something personal? When she wakes up at the hospital, the doctor tells her she isn't human inside. I already need more on the world. The genre is urban fantasy, but f...

Re: Peer Review of a Query
Disclaimer: this is my opinion, and while it may seem harsh I will call it how I see it. Alright, after several MORE revisions, this is what I have come up with...what do you think? I should probably warn that I haven't read any of your past versions. Dear Agent, Some agents want title, genre, and w...

Just so you know, I haven't read the past versions of your query. I should probably also preface up here that I've been told I'm harsh. I will tell you how I see it. And now for something completely different. I have no idea if this works or not. PS I thought plot went in synopsis, not query? Well y...

Re: Query Help: Museum Chronicles
You're welcome. (I hope. I usually tell it like it is when it comes to critiquing.) 3. Where is it written that gods are unseen? In this world, it is a little hard to see whatever god/goddess you worship. This is where you need to clarify your world building (difficult to do when you're trying to co...

Re: Query: YA Victorian Fantasy
I am going to take a different stance from Krista G., and this may seem a bit harsh but it's what I'm thinking when reading this query. What is new here from the rest of the Beauty and the Beast adaptations? Dear Agent: THE BEAST'S APPRENTICE is a YA fantasy re-telling of "Beauty and the Beast&...
