Re: Books About War

The novels I'd like to read about recent wars are the ones written by participants, for the sake of ready-made verisimilitude. The ones I've most enjoyed about the Vietnam and Korean conflicts are by participants. I've read a few nonfiction accounts of recent Middle East conflicts. They're heavily ...

Re: Books About War

Perhaps I’m just complicating the issue but the question, “what do people want?” is a little tricky in this case because I wonder if there is a measure of “what people need” contained in the answer. It’s a long road between flashpoint and catharsis and we can only hope we’re closer to the latter th...

Re: Books About War

During a weekend long discussion with a friend in the TV industry, I was informed this kind of stuff won't sell in the current environment as it is still, "too soon/too much". Yet it appears that such material is selling quickly. Read this from Miss Snark. Scroll down to the second entry. http://mi...

Books About War

Howdy friends, So, I'm working on a new fiction piece revolving around the protagonist's experiences in the Iraq war. Coincidentally, a number of acquaintances who are not aware of my project have been asking me if I care to borrow any of their nonfiction books written by vets of Iraq/Afghanistan, m...

Re: The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Margo - not sure if I would do fiction in all four. I could see fiction in 2 of them, but I'm going to hold off on that until I get more creds. I know my limitations ;) I have about 3 proposals for nonfic works in the stack, and should be ready to Query on a completed one in the Pol/Phil arena, soon...

Re: The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Oh, and I recently found QueryTracker.com...they have an excellent list of different agents. You could probably find quite a few on there you don't have on your list. Thanks Wildheart! Will check this out today as well. I was kind of hoping your 1st post might be the case; apparently it is. As for ...

Re: The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Thanks again Margo - I've looked through Publishers Marketplace, but I'm thinking I may need to spend a little more time there. Will be checking out Agent Query for sure. I'd say the majority of my writing interests fall into 4 basic categories: Military, Politics/gov't, Sports/Fitness, Spirituality...

Re: The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Thanks Margo. My genres are fairly different indeed, but the topic(s) I write on keep the material fairly well in my wheelhouse. In other words, I like to write about the same things, but from different perspectives. I also acknowledge that my abilities with fiction end somewhere between my brain an...

Re: The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Oh yeah, before I forget, I did read the FAQ on genre hopping ( http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2007/12/genre-hopping.html ). The above question relates to those who have already made the decision to genre jump, for whatever reason...and obviously the 2nd half pertains to those who aren't published ...

The Multi-Genre Writer and an Agent

Howdy, In my Interweb perusing of agents, I've noticed that a few - like Nathan - have diverse interests and are willing to rep a variety of works. Some, are very narrowly focused - like "I only rep funny non-fiction writers," or, "I only rep certain religious-themed books." All of this is very unde...

Re: Nonfiction

Aspen - Interesting article. Thanks for the addition to the discussion. Don't think I agree with the idea that everything needs to go digital, though. Maybe I'm a dinosaur..hmmm.. Question for the group: What do you guys and gals think about nonfiction writers branching out to fiction, and vice vers...

Re: Nonfiction

Nick - I absolutely agree with the credibility a book can lend to one's business. It certainly increases marketability. Why do you think the model is broken? In the fitness field (hobby) I have seen a lot of trainers adopt the e-book approach and while it does increase revenue a bit, I have also no...

Re: Nonfiction

Cassandra - That's so cool! I'm not funny enough to try. The B&N manager makes sense. I would not have guessed that, but I also haven't thought about it before. How far along do you plan to go in your writing before seeking an agent?

Good luck to you!
