What to DO With the Publishing Research?

This is a potentially stupid question, but my mom always told me there are no stupid questions, just stupid people…Err, I mean, anyway…moving on. Like a good little author, I have been keeping up on the publishing industry news. I read Nathan’s blog all the time, I read Galleycat, I subscribe to Pub...

Re: New Ideas Interrupting Current Work

This happens to me all the time, and I do a combination of what everyone says. I jot the idea down in it’s own separate document, what I think it’s about, where it might go, who might be the characters. This makes it real enough to occupy space in my brain without totally distracting me. Then I get ...

Re: Co-Authoring / Writing with a Partner

That sounds like a really good situation! I am so glad you didn't think I was trying to rain on your parade. And it's an added bonus if you have your own work, that you could continue while he is working on his end. You might want to decide how much writing the other guy is going to do too. To me, i...

Re: Co-Authoring / Writing with a Partner

Not to be a downer, but I feel like I must give you a word of caution. Be careful in what you invest in co-authoring. I am sure it’s your very best friend you are considering doing this with, someone you like, and trust, but you never know what might happen. True story, happened to me: When I was in...

Re: Who's the best person to be an alpha reader?

An Alpha reader is someone who reads your book as you are writing it. A Beta reader is someone who reads your book after you have written. Some people hand the bok off as soon as they are done writing it. Personally, I prefer to wait until I have done the first round of revision, especially if I wil...

Re: The Process

Thank you everyone, for posting about your methods! I find it extremely helpful to read about other people’s processes. I am a huge fan of experimentation, so I like to see how other people make the magic come. Some quick advice for Emily, if I may: try to not edit as you go. Some people can’t stand...

Re: Who's the best person to be an alpha reader?

I am one of my writer-friends alpha readers, so I can give you what is going through my mind, and what you might want in an alpha reader. This is all my opinion, and experience, so your mileage may vary. Your alpha reader's first job is to be your cheerleader. It's not their job to point out every l...

Re: Query for 'Hard Rock'- Commercial Fiction

And here we go! It’s late and I am tired, so the gloves are off. Just saying. I want to help you hook an agent, so better us tell you than the agent reject you because we went easy on you, right? Right. So, your newer version looks a 100 times better than the first one. Like plastic surgery for your...

Re: Getting Ahead of Yourself

R Louis Scott: I laughed out loud when I read: “I hear that J.K. Rowling has added several rooms to her house to hold the stacks of money, and really, this isn't something you want to play catch-up on.” No, one doesn’t want to get behind on counting all their money, do we? I do (some) of those thing...

Re: Who are the trendsetters?

I would say that in the Urban Fantasy genre (my main genre) Laurel K Hamilton and Jim Butcher set the trend the rest of the authors are following, with mixed results. It's getting a little formulaic now, though, so I am sensing a “reboot” in the genre soon. Something different than the hardened P.I....

CURSE YOU, SHINY FORUM OF WONDER!!!!! I was doing so well with my editing too (I wasn’t really). *sigh* Brian, I have another excuse for you: Helping other people edit their queries and partials is also helping yourself get better at editing! How’s that for you? I love helping other people, in a way...

Christi's excerpt, with my changes directly into the text: (sorry, I don't know how to do that html coding strike through stuff) "Too long. Jakfyr repeated the words like a mantra in his head. It strengthened his resolve and hurried his footsteps. It had gone on far too long. Acting like a beac...

Re: Feedback beginning of Time Tourism

Hi Christi! I would first like to reiterate what the other posters have said: you are brave for posting your beginning. I am an avid fantasy reader myself, though I am extremely picky, and you have my interest. It’s a little difficult giving a critique on such a short excerpt, especially without the...
