I checked the top sellers, and the data was not overwhelmingly female. On the 2009 USA Today list of best sellers, there were 20 women and 15 men with at least one work of fiction. Well, I just checked the Costa/Whitebread Prize Debut Novel Winners and the Guardian First Book Prize Award.
