Writing Contest: SciFi and Accessibility

Writer Friends, I have had the good luck to be asked by Redstone Science Fiction to help judge their first contest. You can find the details at http://redstonesciencefiction.com/contest/ or read the contest call below. I am really excited about the contest, and know some of the very fine scifi write...

Re: Meeting of the Waters - query request

I've been reading queries without replying for a while... but this one SO caught my interest that I had to say so. I would buy this book. I would expect something like De Lint with a gamer twist, an idea I feel very intriguing. Are there any tie-ins to your actual gaming properties? (I'm hoping you ...

Re: Words I Can't Stop Using

I love "Wordle" for this. I run all my chapters through it, because my overused words tend to change based on subject. (Make sure you UNCHECK "filter common words" or you'll miss some great suggestions for editing.)

Weird Tips?

As a memoirist, I have a very quirky "writing tools" that I find indispensable, if unusual. For almost every project, I keep a shoe box full of sealed plastic bags that contain "sense memory" tools. For instance, if I were writing about my maternal grandmother, it might include a cotton ball doused ...

Re: Tools in your Writing Toolbox

Verbs! When I encounter a particularly good one, I put it on a list I keep, because one can never have too many really wonderful verbs!

Re: What are you reading now?

The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt... so far, it's deeply engrossing, beautifully written, and very compelling.

Re: Do you have a rejection contingency plan?

My contingency plan: short form. I've had good luck placing short stories and essays in some pretty good journals, places where I'm proud that my work has appeared. It pays nothing or--if I'm really lucky--next to nothing, but that's okay for now. And, frankly, there is a great feeling to having a p...

Re: Careful Revision vs. Seizing Opportunity...

Thanks, all, for your guidance. I was getting some push from one of my trusted readers to "get this out the door while it's got some pull," and I never discount advice from this reader without giving it a lot of thought. But you have reaffirmed my sense that I should wait until the final polish is o...

Careful Revision vs. Seizing Opportunity...

Dear Fellow Writers, Sorry to be introducing myself in the forums with a question of my own... I've been lurking, but haven't the experience to think I had anything to add to your own questions and instead just learned along with you as I read the responses. I am currently facing a "to query or not ...
