In the U.S. you go to the American Society of Singers, Songwriters and Composers (I think that's the titled)
In Canada, you go to SOCAN.

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hello: I'm haunted souls and I'm from Toronto, Canada. I earn my living as a writer and instructional designer. I've been blessed to publish a few short stories, some poetry, and one MG novel in magical realism - The Bridge of Haunted Souls. I just completed my first literary novel entitled Prairie'...

Re: Short Story - WIP

I feel this could be improved by following the rule: show don't tell. For example: Since leaving the craggy, green hills of eastern Tennessee, he had experienced swamps, huge rivers, endless plains, towering mountains, and arid lands that stretched his strength near its limits. But the Pacific Ocean...

I am very interested. I have skype and use it all the time. I've been a part of several groups and always loved working with them. I know how to criticque properly and am comfortable receiving a criticque in return. I live in Toronto, Canada, and make my living as a writer.

Re: Need critique partner for my novel

I would be willing to serve as a partner. I have an 80K book entitled Prairie's Edge. It's a fictional novel of a young girl living with an alcoholic mother, the mother's drifter boyfriend and her dying grandfather in a tiny home on the Saskatchewan prairie. If you're game then so am I.

Re: Agent requesting Book Proposal for Fiction Submission

I would think this is standard actually. This is to help them market your book and demonstrate to them that you are capable of assisting in that regard. Today, authors are expected to do a lot of the marketing on their own.

Re: Querying UK Agents?

I don't live in the UK myself, but a dear friend of mine does. She's also a writer. She told me just the other day that UK agents prefer the one page synopsis, and the query letter is more of a straight-forward document which basically introduces yourself. I hope this helps.

Re: NEW - Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog

My query: Dear Agent (proper name of course) Can seventeen year old Leslie Shaw ever break free of her toxic and suffocating life in rural Saskatchewan? For most of her life Leslie has been bound to care for Carol, her irresponsible and alcoholic. Leslie’s life sinks further into chaotic desperation...

Re: Synopsis for Lethen

Lethen is a fantasy, action adventure which plays out on a continent comprised of many kingdoms. One of those kingdoms, Gradrom is currently waging war against Lethen’s and has been their enemy for decades. The story is told from the point of view of Allania, a young noblewoman exiled to the Island ...

Re: Summary for Big Mouth Blues -- YA Contemporary

This is a very interesting premise. I love the first line! But then it begins to be a bit repetitive. I would call her father's violent mood swings what they are - violent abuse. Also, don't change POV. This is about Kacey and no one else. So, in the second line I would say; Kacey knows she must kee...

Re: Query YA- The Last

This just seems overly long to me. I also wouldn't put the reference to X-Men there. That is for the agent to decide. Some good elements but it really needs to be pared down. I also agree with other comments.

Re: Query for Kinetic: The First Alliance (YA Sci-Fi)

This too reads far more like a synopsis than a query. A query should say something about why you want to work with this specific agent, and who you are in a couple of sentences. Perhaps this: Intergalactic betrayal and revenge will forever shape the lives of five teens who struggle to redeem their h...

Re: Bleamy's Corner

Hmmm, this sounds like a terrific premise, but this reads more like a synopsis than a query. I sympathize with how difficult queries are but I would try and condense this into one strong paragraph. Young Jeremy's life is thrown into chaos by the 1802 drought in his native Scotland. The untimely loss...
