Re: Beta readers?
I found some excellent readers at Absolute Write. I also went through a few fellow writers that I didn't really click with. Everyone's different, both in terms of what they prefer to read and how they give feedback, and finding a compatible critique partner or beta can be difficult. But it's rewardi...

Re: Taxes and Filing at a Loss
Wilderness, I'd recommend consulting an accountant in the beginning, to clarify how and what you should do now and going forward. I'd also recommend that you ask your prospective advisors if they have experience working with freelancers or writers. You might also consider joining a writer's professi...

Re: have an agent, want a new one . . . protocol?
That's a tough situation, Telos. Has the second agent made a formal offer of representation? It sounds like your current agent has put a lot of work into helping you to improve your manuscript, while there may not be a clear legal question with taking the manuscript elsewhere, there's certainly an e...

Re: Mental Illness in Fiction
I recently finished Talking to the Dead by Harry BIngham. It's adult, a mystery, but the narrator suffers from highs and lows similar to bi-polar disorder. The mystery is interesting, but the slow revelation of the unreliable narrator is absolutely fascinating. I highly recommend it if you're lookin...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
My SQUEE good news has nothing to do with writing, but here's the place to share it... I GOT A NEW JOB! Congratulations, Trixie! A new job and a Halloween start date to boot. Outstanding. :) I'm pleased to announce that RUNNING IN THE DARK, the first novel in my urban fantasy Night Runner series wi...

Re: Should queries,
I'm wondering, if I were selling a collection of connected novellettes (Stories between 5,000-17,500 words.) would I need to query for each story, even if each story is a sequel to the previous story? Anna has a story for age eight, for age ten, for age twelve, for age fourteen, for age sixteen, an...

Re: Should queries,
Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Are you trying to find an agent for, or sell a collection of short stories?

Re: How and when to 'nudge' an agent...?
Three months is a good time to nudge if you haven't heard back. If I were you, I'd respond to the initial email requesting the ms and make the inquiry brief, something like: "I'm just following up to see if you've had a chance to read [title] or, if not, when you think you might have a chance t...

Re: My first full!
Congrats, Cameron! I recommend asking, at the time you send in the full, asking the agent for both confirmation that she/he received it and an ETA for a response (knowing, of course, that the second may vary greatly). I'd politely request an update at 2 months if you haven't heard back by then. It m...
