The Answers

We want them. Who has them? As writers, we spend a lot of time on the internet, don’t we? We join forums, blog, tweet, and follow every link someone posts about articles written by ‘those in the know.’ We try to stay abreast of publishing, are wary of trends and following them, see what deals are (a...

Re: Ask Nathan

Me again. So, I'm almost done with another book I started since I had no agent interest in the first one. If I impressed an agent and they offered representation on my second book, would I be able to present my first book again even if said agent passed on it in the slush pile as 'not for them'? Do ...

Brian -

I wasn't referring to you at all. I hadn't even read your suggestions. I was just holding my red pen back since I got an earfull once from someone who took great offense at someone rewriting their work, so I try really hard not to do it anymore. I fail sometimes :-) But I try.

Dear [AGENT], When Michael Reed was nine years old, he killed his alcoholic father with a Louisville Slugger. He did it to save his mother. He had no way of knowing he was too late. Months later, his mother took her life and along with it, took away most of young Michael’s soul. Forty years later, ...

Re: Contest ideas?

What about random prompts? Sort of like Clue, I guess. "Mr Peacock. In the Library. With the wrech." Only, being random, it incorporates more literary works and ideas. "Professor McGonnagall. In Lothlorian. With the Golden Ticket." Okay. lame example. But a short crossover work b...

Re: Weird names

Thank you, Hillsy, for reminding me why I used to avoid forums. There are people without tact or diplomacy with no regard for other peoples' feelings. I offered my post in the spirit of fun, without mocking others or ridiculing their writing or them personally. You failed at both. Like others have c...

Re: Ask Nathan

There is an agent out there, an actual professional agent with many wellknown books and authors who has a rather offensive way of advising authors why she's the best agent out there. At least, if I were an agent I'd be offended. In fact, I'm not even an agent and I've been bothered by this for two d...

Re: Editing as you go: really that bad?

I've always been a bit disconcerted by the idea of 'first draft' and 'second draft' and 'fifteenth draft' when it comes to editing. I have a file that is my manuscript. I am (or was) constantly editing it, the same file. I did no re-writing, only editing. I write a chapter, then edit it until I'm ha...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I pretty much do only a few things in my blog. I don't bother being another informative voice in the publishing realm because whatever I say, we've all read it somewhere else. Therefore the only purpose my blog serves is to entertain. 1. Short stories, normally several paragraphs long, perfect for t...

Re: Favorite quote

Humanity ain't always what's pretty. Some of the worst killers are pretty. Humanity ain't always what sounds nice and falls smooth on the ear, 'cause any pitchman can charm a snake, but some pitchmen ain't too humane. A person shows humanity when he's there if you need him, when he takes you in, whe...

Re: Fantasy or YA Fantasy

What I've discovered as I've been jumping the fence back and forth, that it's not so much the age of the characters but the pacing, the word count, and the tone of the book. A book that is deeply emotional with slower pacing, over 90,000 words, and has strong language or violence might not be YA jus...

Re: Are you appealing to your target audience?

I will say that a lot of publishers say they want strong female MCs. I fail that because I have a snarky, antisocial male MC. :-) I did not write my story towards an audience, which might be considered a mistake to some. I had a story to tell, that was it. While searching for an agent, I've had oppo...

Re: Marketing & Blogging

Most people here aren't signed yet to be published, myself included, but I've done what I can to promote my book once I find an agent. I'm not the sort to just sit back and hope for the best. I need to be involved, which could be some of my source of frustration with the querying process for my urba...
