Oh man! I read The Hunger games Monday and Tuesday, Catching Fire just came in the mail... and now I'm tapped out! I'll just have to wait until I can afford it- or noone else had it checked out at the library...

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you

I'm 27 and married and still sometimes have problems getting out of bed at night to use the restroom or something. My husband bought me a little flashlight so that I can see and make sure I'm safe. . i'm just like you guys... but instead of a flashlight, it's a baseball bat. maybe i'm a little more...

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit

interesting take Sommer! that IS how it was for our generation growing up. i just wonder what happened to make everyone exaggerate busy-working parents who love their kid into abusive- dead parents? there is an element of romanticism in tradgedy... i wonder if that is part of it? i wonder if some wr...

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit

maybe said : They want to read about reflections of themselves. That's why involving parents is so difficult - it's the kid's story, not the family's story. It's hard to strike the right balance between involving siblings and parents in a way that still engages the reader, and having too much of oth...

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit

i don't think anyone is saying that ALL stories should or should not have absentee parents. each story and character should be considered individually. i think that some of us are saying that having absentee parents can come in handy, while others are saying that we shouldn't kill off parents (or ma...

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit

as a parent (and i wouldn't call myself a bad one) i feel an urge to protect my children. it's natural, my boys are still young. but when they hit their late teens, i plan on giving them freedom to make their own decisions- as my mother did with me. it is natural as a parent to want to solve your ki...

Re: Graphic Novel Suggestions???

To be fair, comic books in general kind of get a bad rap as being superficial or popcorn entertainment, but they're not all lighthearted superhero episodes or funnies. Some of them are incredibly poignant. So true! I did not intend to sound like I was belittling comics! Thank you all for the sugges...

Graphic Novel Suggestions???

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of better graphic novels I could look up. You know, ones that not only have amazing art, but an actual story t...
