Re: Daily Darling
"He bummed a cigarette and, squinting around the totem of smoke, pieced together the story for the cops." *sigh* I loved that damned totem, too. sometimes it helps me with the loss anxiety to paste it in a file I have of sentences to be used when appropriate. that way, it's not gone forev...

Re: The Introduction Thread
I think it's the understanding of how much time has passed, how quickly it has passed, and how little is left. Life is way too short. There is way too much to do. Thirty comes in two years for me, and I'm staggered by the idea. But when I was younger, and time didn't pass quite so quickly, I remembe...

Re: QUERY: The Exciting Life and Death of The Amazing Henry
I'm going to give this a whack... but consider the fact that I haven't researched one iota on how to query for a short story collection. So what i tried to do was make it presented more like a novel. Because it seems as though your short stories are so interrelated, that querying it in almost the s...

Re: Craptastic covers... what are your pet peeves?
got to second the all-wise demented fairy. i hate cover art that doesn't reflect what's inbetween the pages. also, not big on obviously staged photography. and the general romance fabio style covers. give us something symbolic of the story, or a scene from the book, or something unique to the book. ...

Re: Query (Writer's Block)
Ok, I'll give this a shot. My main problem with this query, is that I thought it told a bit too much. It was almost more like a shrunken synopsis. let's try to find the hook, conflict, and quest here... by the way, have you read the inkheart trilogy? i got inkdeath for christmas, but haven't gotten ...

Re: Writer's Block (Story Excerpt)
well, all i can say about the issue of 18 year old girl +older man is that when i was just barely 18 i dated three men: a 26 year old, a 23 year old, and a 20 year old (now my husband). so, i don't really see too much trouble with it. but i think a distinguishing factor is whether it is a high schoo...

"I don't kill my darlings. I kill the bad parts, not the good. the thing about the darlings is that they are bad, because they hurt the story in some way. however, the author loves these particular bits for reasons not always completely pertaining to the book I think "kill your darlings&qu...

Re: Do you like Hardcovers?
If it's a book I adore, i love to have a hardback. Like my LOTR trilogy boxed set with amazing illustrations by Alan Lee, or my 1883 copy of The Scarlet Letter. I love old books, with the paper in between the illustrations and the text to preserve them. There's something about holding something that...

Re: TO STAND BEFORE A BROKEN MIRROR oh so very rough of a draft
Ok, I'm WAY out of my range of usefullness here, but these are my thoughts. It was one of those afternoons, one of those days where the weather outside--what other kind of weather is there, after all?--is suitable for nothing but indoor work, but the air inside is so stuffy that you long to be outdo...

Oh man, I'm going to be in trouble here, because I actually liked the series... One of the main reasons I like the series is that my fifteen year old brother has severe dyslexia. He has learned to hate reading, and has been taunted and bullied for years. The summer before last when I got to see him ...
