Classics vs. YA/Current Fiction in the HS English Classroom
I'd love to hear your thoughts about a blog post I just wrote. It's a pretty heated debate among educators, so it would be interesting to hear what non-educators have to say! Here's a copy of the post.... I teach American Literature. Usually that means the classics (Of Mice and Men, The Crucible, To...

Re: Small Press Question
Cheeky...
Thanks for the information! Such a big help!
I had sent to two other small presses and both are now looking at my full as quick as possible. Should I let the press that offered know this?

Small Press Question
I'm navigating the world of small presses without an agent. My manuscript was pulled out of the slush pile (yay!) and I was offered a contract to publish in their 2013 catalog.
What questions should I be asking the press before signing the contract?

Small Press/Agent Question
I read your posts about small presses, but this is a more personal question. My former agent did a wide distribution of my novel and when we terminated I contacted the agents who had also had my manuscript fulls or had offered representation. Most of them told me they probably couldn't sell the nove...

I'm giving away an advance reader's copy of DIVERGENT. It doesn't come out until May and the book totally kicks ass!

DIVERGENT
I was lucky enough to get a copy of Veronica Roth's YA novel DIVERGENT. It's not coming out into May, but there's lots of hype around it. The book is AMAZING and I'm giving my copy away if you want to check it out here on my blog: http://freckle-head.blogspot.com/2011/02/arc-contest-divergent.html

Re: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Oh, and I added it to my curriculum for next year. I teach highschool and requested 35 copies for a class set. I'm trying to integrate YA into the classroom more and my students read ROMEO AND JULIET that year, so we're going to look at how the two relate because Lauren Oliver wrote it with that tho...

Re: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of it this summer and oh my gosh...the ending is amazing! The last few pages left my mouth hanging open with the stunning images. Wow!

Borders Gift Certificates
Hopefully it's okay to post this hear. I figure the book section might be good because it has to do with buying books! This weekend for any purchase you make at Borders, they will give you a voucher to donate a $15 gift certificate online (through donorschoose.org) to a public school of your choice....

Re: When A Book Becomes a Liar
Sommer... First, The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books, and I'm glad you mentioned it. I teach it to my students and we also look at Nick as an unreliable narrator (why didn't I think of that?!). He starts the first page by saying that his dad taught him not to judge people because he may not...

Re: When A Book Becomes a Liar
Micah starts the book by saying that she's lying to the reader, but as you read on, you see that she may be also lying to herself. Polymath..I think you hit it right on the head with your statement, "What could be a more profound young adult coming of age personal quest than struggling any way ...

Re: When A Book Becomes a Liar
Sommer Leigh...I agree with you. I just finished Liar last night, and I feel your irritation! I loved the book also, but am frustrated that I left not knowing. Not just not knowing the end, but not knowing anything. What in the story is true? What in the story isn't? I feel like I feel for Micah's l...
