Re: Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today

We all contribute if from no other failing than indifference to the sufferings of emotionally abused and neglected, maladjusted and disturbed family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and chance acquaintances. The answer is fostering a more civil and compassionate society. Socially conscious w...

Re: The Rule of Three

Polymath, I like all of your suggestions - cue, clue, preposition, queue. I just wonder if the word 'foreshadowing' is too mysterious and unfamiliar. It suggest that you need to do something special, when really it's just dropping a subtle clue early on for what might happen later.

Re: The Rule of Three

Oh, cool. You read Sanderson! I just finished, and so I'm telling everyone I know. He's amazing. :) Well, I don't know if this helps, but what if you dropped the word, foreshadowing, and used the word "hint" instead. Sort of take the mistique out of it....? You know, I think John Durvin ra...

Re: The Rule of Three

Although I like and use the Rule of Three, I think it can be way overused. There can be a surprise element if you only use two or add one for four, just because the reader is expecting three. So, I'd say think about what fits the scene, not the rule. And goodness, no, you don't want to foreshadow th...

Re: Mental Illness in Fiction

Hey, I know I've read some, but can't think of them right now.

Wikipedia might have some good suggestions.

Good luck!

Re: A Late Advance

Annabella, did you consult a lawyer when you signed the contract? If so, go back to the lawyer, and have him take a look at your contract for your legal rights in this situation. If you didn't use a lawyer, you might check out David at Passive Guy. He's an intellectual property laywer, and he's work...

This seems cool. GLBTQQI is under-represented, and it's good to have a place for folks to go to.

Good luck, QKelly! :)

Re: Think Tank: Fashioning an "approved" stamp

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm cool with letting readers sort through all the books to find the books they want to read. They do it with You-tube and I-tunes. and it seems to work okay. If people are concerned that folks aren't familiar with what quality literature is, however, I think that's an...

What T.V. shows are you watching?

So, I was just on the movie thread, and I thought I'd expand it to T.V. It would be fun to hear about what people like. Now, I realize that serious writers never watch T.V., preferring instead to put all their energy into creating art, but just on the off chance one of you stumbled and accidentally ...

What type of reader are you?

Hey, I found this article from another site. It's pretty fun. It talks about the different types of readers. Check it out, if you're interested: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2012/08/what-kind-book-reader-are-you-diagnostics-guide/56337/ I am a Cross-under Reader. Here's my blurb, so ...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

Doug, you said: 'B&N is fighting for survival*. Worrying about "fairness to authors" is probably a ways down on their priority list.' I agree they are fighting for survival, but I disagree that they have more important things to worry about. I think they are being really dumb if they a...

Re: Amazon - publishing e-books without rights?

I imagine there is a HUGE mess, but I'm equally sure it's Dorchester's mess that Amazon is picking up. Amazon is being extremely fair to the authors it picked up. It is either paying back royalties due and offering an opportunity for them to publish with them, or reverting rights to the authors. See...
