Re: Middle Grade Protagonist
In my opinion, I think so, I think it should be a kid. I agree with Mark - if it's not human, it should have the same (or possibly alittle younger) cognitive ability as a kid. Kids identify with the protagonist, and they'll have a hard time identifying with someone much older or younger than they ar...

Re: Best Books on grammar/tense/world building?
There are so many grammar books out there that are good. But one I like alot, it's funny and very readable is: Who Is I by Patricia O'Conner I had to look up the last name, so here's the link, if you're interested: http://www.amazon.com/Woe-Is-Grammarphobes-Better-English/dp/1573226254 And I'd like ...

Re: Thoughts on retroactively switching to a pseudonym
Well, this is just my opinion, but I think you could replace your name without any issue. I can't see a downside. I'd probably just do it soon, because you never know when your book can suddenly catch someone's attention, and then you'll be stuck with the name.
Good luck!

Well, one thing that may help you decide is the book series is not complete yet. So, whichever way you go, you're still going to be left hanging. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Re: J.K. Rowling's new book - The Casual Vacancy
Doug, I always love your information. What you are saying makes sense. I still wonder at their strategy though. First, they are making people mad at Rowling, which won't benefit her future books. Second, wouldn't they make more money if they priced it at 12.99? So many more people would buy it, I th...

I really have no idea about this - and what agents are looking for. I think agents may react in different ways.....you might want to post this on the "Ask Nathan" thread, since he's a former agent and he may have an insider's perspective. Off the top of my head, the only thing I could thin...

Sorry, no, but I'd go to Konrath's blog, "A newbie guide to pubishing". He recommends his own cover designer, artist, etc. If you contact them, they might be able to answer that question or give you some guidance.
Good luck!

Hey, Tl. Congratulations on making that first step! There is alot of good information here. I'd browse the threads. Also David Gaughran has a terrific blog and Smashwords has a free phamlet on self-publishing. That may answer some questions or give you new information.
Good luck!

Re: J.K. Rowling's new book - The Casual Vacancy
Well, I could be wrong, maybe Rowling is pulling the strings. But she priced her Harry Potter e-books, that she completely controlled, like you mentioned, at a very reasonable $7.99. There is huge political stuff about e-book pricing right now. Publishers are really worried about the loss of income ...

What part of writing do you dislike? Like?
I've been writing more lately, and I've come to realize I really dislike and even dread first drafts. I hate writing them. They feel cumbersome, disappointing, foggy. I always go through a whole process of despair when I write them - I have to tell myself, almost continually, it will get better, or ...
