Re: A shallow book - what to do?
All the posters have given good advice. The 'put - it - away' suggestion is a must, I think. So is the Maass book. I would add using the 'what if' trick, and pushing it to the limit to create sub-plots (you can always pull back). E.g. "What if the accident was a set - up and the victim was dead...

following recipes loses the cake
It has always made me bristle when I read 'rules' for queries, and I think the Twilight phenomenon proves my point. Myer admits to writing a pretty so-so query, but look what happened when an agent disregarded the pedantics! I realise that my philosophy is idealistic, but creative writing and query ...

Re: Finding an unforgettable (and hopefully unused) title...
I am about 1/3 of the way through my first novel. I have several friends that are reading it and giving me feedback and the one thing I am faced with is "What's the title?" Well honestly I don't have one yet. So far I have called it Angelina (main character and what Word decided to save i...

Re: Something I have discovered, how about you...
When I first decided to pick writing back up (after a tryst with the music industry/drugs and partying), my amazingly awesometacular fantasmorgsmic fiance bought me Stephen King's On Writing. He definitely preaches writing out of the mist or in the mist or whatever the saying was. So that's what I ...

Re: How many of you write while tipsy?
I find that I make a lot more typos, but that the writing is less self-conscious and more natural sounding. However, when I edit I have to be dead sober. (Don't get me wrong though, I'm not writing drunk, just a little lubed up). Never tried it, but what a bloody good idea! I'm zipping over to the ...

Re: Favorite quote
I love quotes. Love them. If anyone feels like sharing their favorite quote, that would be very cool. Here's a quote I read this morning that I like. She's talking about the artist's path, but I think it applies to alot of things. "I have learned, as a rule of thumb, never to ask whether you c...

Re: Excertp - REVELATION: The Book of Angel.
Perhaps a synopsis would be helpful... I feel lost. How could you possibly be lost, Cas? You've got a bitchy kid who gets her comeuppence from a cool, unflappable Angel ,a witchy kid who speaks with the authority of the C17 Salem dialect (and I'm still reading her prophecy to try to figure out the ...

Re: Excertp from nameless novel.
Crystal, As I am reading this I am wondering is this the first chapter? are we supposed to know what has happened to Angelina already? It is hard to comment not knowing what point in the book I am looking at and what else has been written. If it is the first chapter I wonder why you didn't start wi...

Re: How do you know your writing is good enough?
I have a fairly substantial amount of E-pub experience and have 7 titles available (the royalties of a couple of these have made me eligible for RWA membership) but my most recent unpublished novel is the one I am hoping to obtain an agent for. My question is, how do you know if you've got what it ...

Re: Query critique - REVELATION
Ok after writing and rewriting the last scene of my novel (at least half a dozen times) and throwing it out the window I thought I would take a break and seek opinions on an early query attempt. So here is my first attempt. Questions: Does it read more like the back cover blurb? Or is that the gist...

Re: To bury or to resurrect? That is the question.
I think only you can answer whether to pull it out of the drawer, but I will say that any novel that has been in there for an extended length of time would at the very least need a big overall to bring it up to the present stylistically. Ultimately, 99% of the time a novel going to sell because of ...

Re: To bury or to resurrect? That is the question.
I just finished a novel that sounds very much like yours theme-wise. Proxy Godlike powers and Armaggedon and all that jazz. I am hoping that movies like the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons mean that the public is ready for spiritual fiction. Wouldn't we all love to write a Dan Brown! I think hi...

To bury or to resurrect? That is the question.
Dear Nathan, I posted this in the wrong thread - silly old woman! Wrote a novel 25 yrs. ago (I'm an old boiler hen) and Danny B. (Robert Ludlam's agent, then) asked to read it. Said it was terrific writing but too below the belt and setting unrealistic. 'Below the belt' referred to terrorism targeti...
