Excerpt of The Devil You Don't Know

Here's the first couple of chapers of my first book (completed and in the querying stage). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Terry 11:35 p.m. Friday The explosion came from just outside the bedroom window. Michael Reed opened his eyes, gasping for air. He was in his bed, his wife sleeping p...

Revised query for DEVIL

Hey guys, I submitted this a few months ago, and got some great feedback. I've reworked it and thought I would post it here to see if anyone has any additional comments, etc. Thanks. You guys are the best. Terry Dear [agent], Newspaper editor Michael Reed takes a frantic call from a former nun, begg...

Re: What are your pet peeves about your own writing?

wildheart- I have a similar problem. I edited in over 20k words in the my first draft (57k to 84k) and I imagine it will get longer as I go through and focus on adding descriptions. Plenty of time to edit and add more stuff. Thanks for that. It's nice to know I am not the only one that feels this w...

Re: New query for The Devil You Don't Know

Well, I hate to butt in here, but I appreciate any help I can get.

I took no offense, Brian, and I'm sure Christi meant none. Both of you were helpful to me, so there. Everyone is happy.

Re: New query for The Devil You Don't Know

Thanks for the feedback, you guys! I really appreciate it. Brian, I think you hit the nail on the head. There's so much going on in the book that it has proven very, very difficult for me to boil it down into a simple hook. The more I try, the more convoluted it becomes. I just finished a massive re...

New query for The Devil You Don't Know

I posted an earlier version of this a couple of months ago and got some excellent feedback from you guys. I re-worked it and thought I would post a rough draft of the new version. I'm not wedded to it, and I certainly welcome your input and criticism. Thanks guys. Terry Dear [AGENT], When Michael Re...

Re: POLL: Where do you buy your books?

Generally, either Borders or Barnes & Nobles. Sometimes, from an airport giftshop or bookstore. I've never purchased a book online, although I'm not opposed to it.

Re: 'Fess Up

Honestly? Not as much as I should have. I'm doing final revisions and it's driving me insane. I would so rather be working on my wip, but I HAVE to get the first baby finished and out the door.

So in total, about 12 hours at the computer this week. I hate real life, sometimes.

Re: Getting Ahead of Yourself

I am terrified of doing anything that might piss off the literary gods, whoever or whatever they might be. So as I fondle my manuscript to death with wave after wave of revisions under the guise of "polishing," I find myself sitting around and thinking of the poorhouse and how I'm going to...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

First sentence frm my wip:

The boy plopped his backpack onto the floor just outside the stall closest to the window and deftly slipped the Heckler-Koch G36 mini assault rifle from its hiding place between his American History book and a pair of balled-up sweatpants.

Midwestern blizzard (Monday, Feb. 8)

Because, you know, we deserve some attention, too.

And because my driveway is already impassable, and we have 24 hours of snow to go!

Snowpocalypse II for sure.

Re: What are you writing now?

My completed project, which I'm revising in hopes of querying soon, is character-driven, mainstream fiction with literary underpinnings. Oh, with lots of plot. And swear words. So there.

Re: THE DEVIL YOU DON'T KNOW query

Well, after a bit more polishing, I've sent my query off to an agent! Yikes. And no, not Nathan. Not sure if I'm ready for that yet.

The wait begins.
