Re: Ask Nathan
Hi Nathan, I recently happened to come across two different books, by two different authors, published by two different well-known houses, and with two different cover designers, but both books have the same photo on the cover. There are slight differences in colour due to digital manipulation, but ...

Re: A Reliable Wife. Anyone else hate it?
I actually quite liked it, but you're right about the repetitive sentence constructions. The chapters that were nothing but narrative summaries/lists irked me too. Loved the characters and story though! While we're on topic of bestsellers we hate, though, I got through the first 100 pages of "...

A Reliable Wife. Anyone else hate it?
After seeing many great reviews for "A Reliable Wife," by Robert Goolrick, I finally read it. As soon as I picked up this book, all I could think of was Nathan's recent post on repetition http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2010/03/blog-post-on-repetition-repetition-that.html . I'd be willing ...

Re: Editing as you go: really that bad?
I'm like Ink in that I write pretty clean on the first go. I don't find a lot of grammar or spelling mistakes in the revision. Instead, I tend to fiddle with structure, cut irrelevant things, add necessary details, and improve my prose. So, for me, editing as I go is a big no-no. If I were to focus ...

Re: Double Narrative Structure
Thanks ladymarella, Jaime and CharleeVale! I read "The Forgotten Garden" recently, and I'm on the look-out for "The Shifting Fog." Haven't heard of "East," but I'll check it out. Jaime, I do live in Australia, but I'm actually Canadian born and raised. I think there are...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?
I've just posted my interview with Jennifer R. Hubbard, author of "The Secret Year." She's a client of Nathan's.

Re: Double Narrative Structure
Thanks for the tips, Polymath. I appreciate your help. It all seems to be going well at this point, so maybe I'm just over-thinking the whole process. I just don't want to get to the end and then find a lot of weaknesses in the execution.
Cheers!

Re: Double Narrative Structure
Is there some reason you can't just have odd numbered chapters from one POV and the even numbered chapters from the other POV? That seems like a simple enough way to have two POV characters without confusing the reader. Or is that what you guys are talking about? I had the image of a double narrati...

Re: Double Narrative Structure
Thanks for the tips and the link, Polymath :) I agree that, in most circumstances, it's best to stick with a straight narrative structure. That's what I intended to do when I first started writing my book. But, as I got further in, I realized that without a dual narrative structure I would be forced...

Double Narrative Structure
Hey all, My novel is told from the perspectives of two different people. Their stories--though separate--depend upon one another to reveal the plot. I'm wondering if anyone knows of either online or print resources with information on writing double narrative structure. I've been searching, but have...

Re: Qualified to Write???
All through school, I was told I had writing talent, so when it came time to apply to university, you can bet I applied for a degree in creative writing. Problem was, at 18 years old, I was way too young and naive to understand how the world works, let alone write a publishable book. The structured ...

Re: TWILIGHT - thoughts?
I'm an English teacher, and it drives me crazy that all students ever seem to read is Twilight. Seriously, they tote it around like a textbook. I'm sure I'm the only person on the face of the planet who hasn't read the series or watched the movie, so I can't really comment on the quality of the writ...
