Send MS to editor I met when MS isn't finished?
I placed in a contest that was judged by an editor whose work I really respect. She read the first few chapters of my manuscript, made some great comments, and asked me to contact her. That's great! Except... the manuscript isn't finished. It wasn't a requirement of entering the contest. I've writte...

Re: How to Become an Agent/Find an Internship With an Agency?
Also, just want to throw in that I've seen several agents advertise internships on their blogs and on Twitter. If you haven't made a Twitter list (a twist?) of agents, I recommend that you do!

Re: What is the worst thing you have ever thrown up?
This cracks me up! For me, it was Japanese eggplant curry, eaten at 5 AM on my 24th birthday, after a long night of karaoke and wine in Tokyo. I threw it up not only at three different subway stations (had to keep getting on and off the train), but also a few hours later, on a bullet train speeding ...

Re: Time to Write
Beethovenfan, I'm jealous of your year's worth of writing time! I daydream about that sort of thing. But it's true about not getting much done when you feel like you have all the time in the world -- occasionally I'll take a day off work to write, and I find I spend about the same amount of time on ...

Re: What is a typical day like for you?
I'm busy, but not in the same way from day to day, so I have to take a few minutes at night to mentally prepare my schedule for the next day. I find if I don't schedule my time -- even my free time -- I wind up whiling away hours on the Internet in the name of "research." I'm really, reall...

Re: Show Us Your Tabs
I'm trying to remember to use Mac Freedom more often (program that shuts down your wireless for a certain number of hours) because I am such an Internet addict it's not funny. For example, last night I sat down "to write" at 8 PM and FINALLY got around to opening my Scrivener doc with my o...

Re: Query for The Husky and The Boy #2 revised
I don't have time to do a full query critique right now, but I wanted to leave a quick note. The term "children's book" or "beginner children's book" isn't specific enough, and the type of book this is will determine what info the query letter should have. First, determine if you...

Re: LABOR DAY WEEKEND WRITE-OFF
I switched up my goal for Labor Day. My original goal was to finish the draft of a particular manuscript -- and I wound up doing that about a week ago. It turned out I was closer to the end than I thought, and I didn't need the 15,000 words I predicted I would. That was a nice feeling! I'm still not...

Re: Blogs: What do you like to read about?
I follow 100+ blogs. I need to cut back! I started following writing-related blogs about 5 years ago. I still follow writing blogs, but the things that interest me have changed over the years. For instance, when I started following writing blogs, I was looking for: - guidelines on query writing - gu...

Re: Online Literary Journals
I subscribe to only one print literary journal (The Georgia Review, published by my alma mater), but I regularly read about 15 online literary journals. I like to be able to pop in to one of my favorites on my lunch break at work and read a short story, or a few pieces of flash fiction, or a handful...

Re: Who first inspired you to read?
The school librarian when I was in the first grade. She told me that I wasn't allowed to check out chapter books or novels, that because I was in first grade I needed to stick to the picture books section because the other books were too hard for me. Being an entirely huffy child, I thought, "I...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition
I just finished it late last night and I'm still processing. Actually, I had a lot of trouble sleeping because I was thinking so much about the book! I had a lot of expectations for the book but I'm realizing how Hollywood-ized they were. Like anticipating how Katniss would perform one big, final he...

Re: Favorite non-fiction book
Reading Joan Didion's nonfiction for the first time blew me away. I began reading her in my early 20s and was completely undone by some of her essays, notably the young-woman-in-New-York treatise "Goodbye To All That." The great thing about Didion is she has a pretty sizeable body of work,...

Friday the 13th
Did anyone else have a bad one? I'm not normally superstitious, but sheesh. Yesterday may end up ranking in my Top 10 Worst Days Ever. First, I got a call from a Very Major Person in the Field In Which I Work -- someone I had, up to this point, only read about -- blasting me for attaching the wrong ...

Re: LABOR DAY WEEKEND WRITE-OFF
Joining the draft-finishers club! I have about 25K to write before Labor Day, but work stuff is going to keep me busy most of the time up to then (I'm writing this post from my day-job office on a Saturday afternoon. Just ugh). I anticipate having to make a BIG push to finish over Labor Day weekend.
