In general, as long as it is a positive reference, it's fine. It's considered incidental use. You couldn't use their logos or the like, but just mentioning them is fine.

From the number of posts, and the content, I'm guessing it was script bots running against the forms. If you aren't already running it, probably would be good to upgrade to the latest version of phpBB (3.0.12).
