Re: What are you reading now?

Just finished Minder by Jennifer Kabay. I loved it! MC's are a little younger, but has some dark themes to it. She put some twists on the traditional mythical characters that I really liked. Had not heard of the author before, but was glad I bought it. Just saw it's free right now on Amazon if anyon...

Re: Books As Books

I recently bought a Kindle book for my iPad and started reading it. It's ok for when I'm out and about with free time or when I'm traveling, as print books can be somewhat unwieldy in my purse (especially as I favor large hardbacks). But I won't read many that way. It's not just the permanence for m...

Re: Guilty Pleasure Books

The plot is recycled. The love triangle needed to end about 8 books ago. The family is so obnoxious and stale that I usually skim those scenes, and the side kick is quite possibly the most annoying character in literary history. But I can't stop reading Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. (Cave...

Re: How many Characters do you have?

My WIP is a YA fantasy with 3 main characters and a large cast of supporting and minor characters, including those that are non-human. I really struggled with the question about giving them last names, and ultimately decided against it. I just don't think it's important in my particular story, but I...

Re: Females Dominate in YA?

I don't have an answer to this, but I have to wonder if it's based on the actual stories, or if the men do better simply because they have a male name on the cover. I've actually heard of female authors choosing a male pseudonym for this very purpose (the same as men using a female name when they wr...

Re: Reading as Catharsis

I think it absolutely can be. If you read something about a similar stressful situation, you might be able to see the situation you're in from a different perspective. As well as solutions. The story may offer solutions to the problem/situation that you wouldn't have otherwise thought of. That often...

Re: Mental Illness in Fiction

I highly recommend I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. It's a bit lengthy and heavier than YA reads, but it's really good. He gives great insight into mental illness and its effects on the people around the ill person.
