Re: Best TV show of all time?

I have to support the M*A*S*H* nomination. It was really a groundbreaking merger of comedy and drama. Coming from the "I Love Lucy" generation (also pretty cool), I found that most TV comedy was pretty shallow and inane. M*A*S*H* had soul wrenching substance and some very complex character...

Re: Share Your Dreams

My dreams aren't usuallly dark. My number one recurring dream is that of flying. There are interchangeable characters, but it always has the same core elements. This awesome power to fly is superman-like, and stuns and amazes my family, friends and foes. It surfaces most when I have the least power ...

Re: How old are you?

All kidding aside, I am so excited to see so many young writers involved in a community like this at ages of 16 and 20! This blog is really a mutual learning opportunity that is only just now available to all of us. It's very exciting to imagine how literature will evolve as a consequence of this an...

Re: Does your genre make it difficult to find an agent?

I don't write to genre. I know that is commercially naive, but it feels more natural to let a story be what it is and try to categorize it later. Consequently, I'm an in-betweener and have a hard time figuring out the whole genre thing. The industry doesn't help. For instance, I really envy Nick's c...

Re: Forum Suggestions?

Could we add a forum called "All Things Improv?" Each new thread would be a conversation started by someone who sets a fictional scene and then starts a dialog sequence with the first voice. Other voices come from responses. We'd have to create protocols, like someone would have to call th...

Re: Forum Suggestions?

Holly's contest idea is not bad. Traffic seems to be decreasing a little. Things like the guest blogger contest of a few weeks back seem to have a lasting effect. I also feel like we need to energize the subject matter some. Is it possible we've run out of new topics? Is there a such thing as topic ...

Re: Head-Hopping - what's the deal people?

I have read some really artful multiple POV novels in which the authors seemed to have intuited when I was hungry for more information than the main character could have possibly known. I feel as though I'm Scrooge, being whisked from one scene to another by the narrator ghosts -- all to good effect...

Re: Action, anyone?

For many agents, that's as much as they are interested in seeing at first. For the commercial realities of our art, the word "grab" is not an exaggeration for the goal of the first few pages. I wonder how this phenomenon has affected story-telling, or has it always been so?

Re: Olympics Discussion, Anyone?

I swear I don't have fast enough eyes to follow hockey. (I'm also willing to explore that it might be "processor speed.") Everyone around me is oohing and aahhing and I keep asking what just happened. The game was great from what I could tell second hand.

Re: Tone down a gay character?

I really appreciate KappaP's, Holly's and Tameson's comments. I especially appreciated KappaP's candor. I felt like I ignited strong feeling, which is a good thing, but I wanted to further explain myself. I know and love a number of gay men and women (some of whom are family), so please be assured t...

Re: Tone down a gay character?

Same struggle for me. I have a gay character in my WIP. Though he is lovingly portrayed, he is effeminate. In other works, my dialogue drawled heavily, or it giggled with squealing girls. In each case I struggled with stereotyping and I have paused when creating the voices for racially, regionally o...

Re: You know you've been up too late working on your book when..

Seamus, it sounds like you spent just the right amount of time at your computer. A buddy in my (former) writer's group always took things darker than I would have and seems to still sit on my shoulder pulling me away from Mayberry.* I suppose my discomfort is cathartic -- I need to let my story rid...

Re: How old are you?

When faced with the apparent demographic of Nathan's World, I feel like I've walked in on one of my adult kids' parties. I finally understand why the YA genre (aside from being red hot commercially) is such a topic of conversation here. It doesn't mean I'm going anywhere, but I suppose I ought to ap...
