Re: Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today
I actually haven't heard anyone blame writers...all I've seen is a ton of gun control rhetoric right now. And I think the last thing people should be doing are preaching -- for or against whatever the argument is about. Twenty six people -- twenty of them innocent children -- are dead. For Christ sa...

My First/Last legal name spells A LOT because I have three As, two Ms, D, S, U, E... Amanda Boyle(pen name) doesn't have a lot of "normal" words in it.

Re: Anachronistic Metaphors
If it's told in the third person I don't really have a problem with it. Anyone retelling a story would naturally insert modern day metaphors and colloquialisms in the narration. If you're retelling a story passed down from your Irish ancestors you aren't going to break into a thick Irish accent and ...

Re: Technical question
I'm pretty sure that falls more under a common phrase since its been around for fifty years. It would be like someone making sure people understood a reference to Romeo and Juliet. As for the commas...I give no advice since I believe they are the punctuation of the devil (Okay, maybe I just don't un...

Re: Why do you want to be published or why do you write?
If I didn't write I think I'd be that girl who talks to herself. It's always been an outlet for me -- During high school I'd be in class and write entire short stories in these notebooks with myself as a character. Now with a degree in psychology I know that was a coping mechanism for a crappy home ...

Re: Major Blunder with New E-Book
My first thought if I came across that is the writer probably a) didn't get it edited b) is very wordy and long winded. I don't trust a debut writer to pay $5 for a self-pub book that's that long. Your book is nearly twice as long as Atlas Shrugged and there is no way that would have ever become suc...

I'm on track... 14,948 words. I was ahead but I feel like crapola and my head is way too fuzzy to write tonight.

I need a fake story idea...
So in the book I'm writing for NaNoWriMo the main character gets cast in The Next Big Book Adaptation...but I can't think of a decent plot to freaking save my life. She's 16, there is going to be a male romantic interest(in the fake book/movie) and since all these YA books have romance in them, obvi...

Re: Official NaNoWriMo 2012 Thread
I just pounded out another 2,001 words in 2 hours (and 5 minutes if you want to be exact) 7,991 total! I did a lot of outlining but there was research I just didn't THINK of. Like, my character gets lost her first time on the NYC subway...well, I needed to figure out how exactly she was going to get...

Re: Does YA or Adult fiction,
If you notice (which you may not, I just read a lot of the genre), in many YA fiction the adults are either the antagonists, dead, or have a reason to be absent. And actually, off the top of my head it is almost always the case in sci-fi/fantasy (Hunger Games, Twilight, Mortal Instruments, Divergent...

Re: Official NaNoWriMo 2012 Thread
Can NaNoWriMo be a WIP? I've been outlining and character sketching like crazy because I thought it had to be new.
