Re: Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today

My heartfelt condolences go out to the community of the Sandy Hook tragedy. If an event of that scope and horror can have a silver lining, even a tiny one, let it be answers to why such tragedies occur so they may be prevented. Not assigning blame, finger pointing, fault finding, not a platform for...

Re: Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today

I actually haven't heard anyone blame writers...all I've seen is a ton of gun control rhetoric right now. And I think the last thing people should be doing are preaching -- for or against whatever the argument is about. Twenty six people -- twenty of them innocent children -- are dead. For Christ s...

Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today

So let me make this clear: what happened today at Sandy Hook Elementary school is absolutely terrible. I don't disagree with that one iota. My heart breaks for the families of those who are now no longer with us. I am disturbed by the reaction, however. Already, before the dust has even settled, bef...

Reading as Catharsis

So in one of Nathan's posts, he talked about Writing as Catharsis http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2012/10/writing-as-catharsis.html , i.e. the ability to resolve or at least slightly relieve anger and grief through writing about them. So here's the question: is there such a thing as Reading as Catha...

Anachronistic Metaphors

Anachronistic metaphors. They really bug me. What I mean by that is when I'm reading a book clearly set in some time not named the modern age, with protagonists who don't come from the modern age, and yet the author persists in inserting narration into the book with metaphors such as "Character...

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

Can't you dedicate some time, for example, during your weekends for edinting? it'll be like a culmination of your writing week. :) I'll have to try that. Right now, the only time I have is late at night, which is, as I've said, not ideal for editing. I'm pretty much committed to devoting a lot of m...

Re: Guilty Pleasure Books

I felt the same way about the Inheritance Cycle (though he kind of lost me after the second book). ;) We're about the same age and, when those books came out, it was the perfect timing to push me in my own writing dreams. Kind of a "if he did it, I can too" sort of thing. So, they'll alwa...

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

I know right? and that time you spend trying to deepen the pool is time not spent writing

Re: Guilty Pleasure Books

I'm not familiar with either Jeaniene Frost or Janet Evanovich. Should I be?

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

So, to the gist. The one who didn't get it got it on a 'cold read.' I told him nothing so that I could get a pure reaction from him. The other knew it was a bit of a satire because I told him. As I go through what is hopefully the last edit before I start shopping it around, I ask you this from you...

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

Great advice all. Thanks. When this month ends and I drop back down to merely lethally busy, I shall definitely try these methods. Here's the second problem with my current WIP. Its been through a rough draft and an edit. I had 2 beta readers peruse it recently. They both got about a third through i...

Does anyone else have this problem?

I am a young writer, which means I go to college, so I'm incredibly busy. I can slip in a bit writing whenever I have a spare moment or two, but editing... It's just that when I edit, I want stable, normal hours for several days in a row in order to make any progress. Is there any way anyone has fig...

Re: Guilty Pleasure Books

Yes, I have read her essays. I found them to be the most coherent and logical criticism of the books out there, however, I still like the books. Sadly.

Guilty Pleasure Books

So, I like several books considered bad in literary circles, for various reasons. The most prominent example is the Inheritance Cycle books by Christopher Paolini. People hate on those books for several reasons, among them a overly expository writing style and stealing ideas from both Tolkien and St...
