Re: Protagonist/Hero is also the bad guy??
Thanks a lot guys.... I put those movies on hold @ the library. I've never heard of Bad Lieutenant, but just checked out the trailer, and damn it looks good. I'm looking forward to writing a tragic hero, and working on making him bad, but at the same time having people feel empathy for him too. Chee...

Re: Protagonist/Hero is also the bad guy??
Thanks guys...and for the link. I think my guy is going to be more like the "Tragic Hero". I'm reading "Story Engineering" right now, by Larry Brooks. Very good stuff!

Protagonist/Hero is also the bad guy??
Hello everyone. I've been reading a lot of how-to books and things on the net, about making our "hero" go through ups and downs and learning/becoming better/overcoming their past issues etc. However, in my story, my main charachter,my hero......is not a good person. He does some bad things...

Re: Writers with Small Children
Hello fellow parents :D I've been trying so hard to get some writing time in, but it truly is hard. I have three- 11,8 and 4. It seems there are never enough hours in the day, and when the day is over, I'm too burnt out to think about writing. Oh well, the 4 year old will be starting school in Septe...

You've all been very helpful, so thanks! I have another. RE: setting- Say I want to use Toronto, and say, a specific area. Even a specific coffee shop/bookstore. For example, "Harold's Books and Coffee". Am I able to use that store in my novel? Is there issues using their name, and maybe b...

Re: The Introduction Thread
Cool!, I have story engineering coming in a few days, from Amazon. Donald Maass's book "Writing the Breakout Novel," is on hold at the library. Looks like I'm on the right track.
Does Margo know Mr. Maass?(ps- how do I pronounce that?)
Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Introduction Thread
Thanks for the warm welcomes guys. What book or two do you recommend for the beginning writer? I've been borrowing a ton of them from the library, but only found a few to click with me. Any suggestions?
I have stories in me....I just need to learn how to put them on paper!

My Avatar...
Hey all. I'm trying to find a picture that I can put up for an avatar, but I'm having a hell of a time. I'm taking pictures, editing them, trying to get the dimensions right, or the pic quality down. I believe it has to be 20kb or less. Not working for me. How can I find something to fit in there? T...

Re: Your Best Advice to a New Writer
Thanks to all who've posted in this thread. As someone who is extremely green in the writing depatment, I'm learning a lot. And when I say green, I mean it. I'm 34 years old, and haven't written since my last high school English essay!!!!

Re: Setting: Canada vs. USA
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I guess what I'm afraid of is, someone from the giant market in the US, picking up my book and reading that a murder took place in Halifax-on the east coast of Canada, and basically thinkng, "no thanks.."

Thanks again Brenda, you were right, no bite!
Great advice.....I definitely won't be writing about life in Nunavik, northern Quebec, or deep in the heart of the prairies!
